- If you've already played Heavy Rain on PS3, you won't miss anything. If you're totally new to it as a PC gamer, it might surprise you with its branching narrative and raw drama, even if the writing occasionally misses the mark.
Richard Costa · Jul 05, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - More could have been done to make Heavy Rain a bit more palatable for modern audiences, but the fact is that it’s still a great story-driven game despite its myriad of issues. As a console game ported to PC, it’s best played with a controller, but the range of graphical settings available are a definite boon. Whether you’ve never played Heavy Rain before or are a fan of the game wanting to experience it yet again, there’s no finer way if you have a decent PC. Otherwise, maybe stick to the PS4 version.
Richard Seagrave · Jul 03, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The story is genuinely interactive, with many branching paths and sudden deaths, as well as a slew of different endings. In that sense, I really enjoy playing it. But as a piece of storytelling, and as a murder mystery, it's really quite poor. When you're laughing at scenes that were meant to be powerfully dramatic and emotional, you know something has gone wrong. But for all its faults I'm glad to see it on PC, because there's an interesting game hiding in there somewhere, drowning in a storm drain, occasionally poking its head above the water for a gasp of air.
Andy Kelly · Jul 01, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Heavy Rain was quite the unique release in 2010 and is still worth a look for genre fans. This PC re-release improves a lot of things about that original experience, but doesn’t go as far as it could in some respects. What damages things the most though is the fact that the game isn’t quite as original anymore, making its previous flaws all the more glaring. This release doesn’t do much to gloss over them either. And with the omission of some DLC it makes for the feeling that this is a solid way to play, but not a must for those who’ve experienced it all before.
Kyle Hanson · Jun 28, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Despite having some awkward control quirks while playing with a mouse and keyboard, the PC version of Heavy Rain is just as solid as the PlayStation 4 re-release. Both versions look superior to the PS3 original, but still have a few issues that make none of them the definitive way to play David Cage’s best title.
Tyler Treese · Jun 26, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Re-releasing Heavy Rain in the current landscape does much to sharply contrast everything good and bad about it. Its commendable presentation is amplified, as too are its grander faults in storytelling and voice acting. And yet even as there are games that succeed where Heavy Rain fails, it can still be said there’s almost nothing else like it.
Justin Clark · Mar 03, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If you have never played Heavy Rain before, I definitely think it is worth discovering on the PS4. It shows its PS3 origins for sure, and will not impress any players these days with its visuals. But it still retains the core game mechanic that makes the experience just as fun as it was back in 2010. This is a great game that still has the power to engross today’s gaming audience.
Patrick Anderson · Mar 02, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Ultimately, Heavy Rain is an experiment that both succeeded and failed, when it could easily have been a total success if the brains behind it weren’t trying so hard to be smart and cared more about providing a sensible plot as opposed to a shocking one. As a game, Heavy Rain is acceptable and not without its high points. It’s damn lucky it isn’t the movie that it wishes so badly to be.
Jim Sterling · Mar 02, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Heavy Rain is an admirably ambitious creation capable of engrossing the mind and engaging the emotions like few games that have gone before. Visually and aurally it's a decadent feast for the senses, but its frequent descents into ham-fisted schlock and downright broken storytelling ultimately make it a clumsy case of style over substance. It's a likeable mess if you don't think too hard, but nevertheless, a mess it remains.
David Houghton · Jun 24, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Heavy Rain was bound to make a few missteps as a pioneering attempt at an interactive movie, one that matches the production values of many films whilst maintaining the level of involvement and excitement one would associate with a top-class action video game. It's innovative and brilliantly acted, and the Move controls bring a new level of engagement to the action scenes whilst registering subtler movements just as well.
