- In that respect, it might be the perfect gateway to an otherwise niche genre, one that is well-worth dipping into. This is one of my favorite iOS games of 2016 so far, and I strongly recommend giving it your attention, regardless of whether you're an old hand at the genre or a newcomer. Just make sure you play it through to the true ending, because if you don't, you'll never truly get ahead in your studies at this strange school.
Shaun Musgrave · May 31, 2016 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - This iOS version of Hatoful Boyfriend also bundles in an extra scenario and ending, meaning there’s a reason to replay it if you’ve already enjoyed earlier versions. Once upon a time, you might have thought this concept was utterly absurd. You’d have been right — but it’s the kind of absurd that’s immediately loveable. It’s hard to not be warmed by Hatoful Boyfriend’s charming visuals and the quirky storytelling, and who knows? You might just find love after all.
Jennifer Allen · May 31, 2016 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Despite the generally witty dialogue, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the whole experience was just bizarre. Why is Groovy Pete trying to date talking birds? The basic premise is completely insane, and gets more ridiculous the deeper you dive. If you can swallow (heh, bird puns) the basic idea, there are a lot of weird and wonderful stories to be uncovered in Hatoful Boyfriend. Just don’t expect to do much actual playing.
Paul Sullivan · Aug 06, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Hatoful Boyfriend is a visual novel about dating birds, but only on the surface - underneath is a web of interconnected stories filled with interesting plots, emotion, and even a twist here and there. It's certainly not for everybirdie, but it's worth a peek if you're at all curious; just don't expect it to be too realistic.
Kyle Wakeling · Aug 05, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - As for the remake, Hatoful Boyfriend has nice art, though nothing particularly spectacular. Then again it’s pretty hard to get too worked up over the aesthetics of a game that is mostly made up of static photographs of birds. The human character portraits are nice, though they only appear once. The music is atmospheric but doesn’t add a lot in particular, but the touchscreen capabilities are a nice … touch.
Georgina Young · Jul 31, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - I can’t stress it enough, if you can make it past the fact that you’re trying to date birds, you’re in for a pretty insane but intriguing time that is told impressively well. If you’re into the crazy Japanese stories that eventually lead to some even crazier madness, this is the game for you. If you think cutesy pigeon dating is not for you or if you’re not much of a reader, stay away. Stay far away.
Drew Leachman · Jul 30, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It’s a cleverly-written game, with surprises lurking under its pink and fuzzy surface ready to reward players for investing their time. Whilst some people may get bored having to replay the same segments multiple times, those willing to persevere will surely be pleasantly surprised by the breadth of content hidden under its bizarre surface.
Kim · Jul 29, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Dating birds may seem silly, but Hatoful Boyfriend nails its plot with the help of its well-written characters, and even surpasses its humorous premise with mysterious themes and dark undertones. Though Hatoful Boyfriend may have some mild technical bugs on the Vita version, the new Tohri path is a great addition to the dating sim.
Miranda Sanchez · Jul 27, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Hatoful Boyfriend earns almost everything else it does. Like those fantastical and ridiculous movies and novels, it demonstrates an ability to rise above its base, absurd concepts and weaves several stories that last. It’s much more than it seems, and begs for you to play it and discover its depth.
Tyler Colp · Jul 27, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Hatoful Boyfriend is the food fight of video games. While you can derive a great deal of entertainment from its complete insanity, this doesn’t negate the fact that the end result is a total mess. In order to properly judge the quality of this bizarre visual novel, all of the awkward sentiment surrounding it has to be removed.
