  • A remake with the confidence to keep the friction, Gothic 1 Remake doesn't drag a cult classic into the present so much as prove it never belonged to the past.

  • Gothic 1 Remake is a superlative reinterpretation of an all-time classic game. Whilst the initial difficulty level and complete lack of handholding or quest markers etc.

  • Gothic 1 Remake faithfully reconstructs a cult classic RPG from a team that clearly respected the original, and feels like a game from a bygone era largely for the better.

  • Gothic 1 Remake is a faithful retelling of the original Gothic, warts and all. Perhaps too ambitious for its budget, it offers even hardened gamers a truly unique, hardcore roleplaying experience. While weighed down by a litany of bugs and issues, there is a lovingly made product underneath – but it’s hard to recommend in its current state.

  • Despite all the games it influenced over the years, Gothic still stands alone. This remake is both faithful and fresh, providing much-needed improvements and wider accessibility in spite of its unforgiving nature and undeniable eurojank (a term the original Gothic helped establish). Newcomers may feel the game is a relic in some ways, but anyone interested in an underplayed yet seminal classic owes it to themselves to give Gothic 1 Remake a shot.

  • Gothic 1 Remake is stubbornly faithful to the original to the point where it wears its flaws just like its triumphs, a frustrating experience.

  • FAIR Gothic 1 Remake definitely deserves praise for preserving everything good about the original release and for its revamped visuals.

  • Gothic Remake is a new version of the 2001 action RPG, with controller support, updated graphics and a more refined combat system.

  • Brilliant, bizarre, and a bit too obnoxious for its own good, Gothic 1 Remake is a solid remake of a hugely influential RPG. Dedicated to keeping the deeply unique and unfriendly spirit of the original alive, this still feels like little else, though I can't help but wish it was willing to add more polish.

About the game

Gothic 1 Remake is an action role-playing game set in a third-person perspective within a fantasy open world. It is a remake of the 2001 game Gothic, developed by Alkimia Interactive using Unreal Engine 5. The player controls a nameless prisoner sent into the Valley of Mines, a penal colony surrounded by a magical barrier. The game features NPC routines, faction-based quest paths, and a progression system where the player starts with no skills and must learn them from trainers. Navigation is done without a minimap, and the game world is 10 to 30 percent larger than the original, with expanded chapters and additional quest content. Combat and skill systems are based on the original game's design.
