- The violent mix of combat and platforming provided by Gori: Cuddly Carnage won’t be for everyone, but it will be for more people than you’d expect. The gameplay is surprisingly engaging if you’re willing to take on the unsettling visuals.
Kirk Hiner · Oct 15, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - With Gori, the hoverboard platforming mechanics just aren’t as precise as they could be, frustratingly so, and that ends up being a lot of what you are doing in these levels. Especially with boss battles, the expectations of the game aren’t entirely clear and can leave you fumbling. Also this game takes a pretty steep hit in the graphics department due to the Switch’s lower power to handle Gori’s fur. I stand by my hype for this game and love the fact that these games can still exist in this space. I pine for the days of the B game, and will support devs who continue to hold that torch, but I also am realistic in that there’s nostalgia definitely clouding my lenses here.
Alex Orona · Oct 09, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Gori: Cuddly Carnage feels like a game you’d find in a bargain bin during the 360/PS3 era and I mean that in the nicest way possible. You just don’t get games like this anymore—low-budget games with a gameplay first mentality that isn’t afraid to be out there and weird. Gori: Cuddly Carnage really reminds me of games like Lollipop Chainsaw, MadWorld and No More Heroes, just to name a few.
Jake Mounsey · Sep 30, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The very premise of a cute little cat, on a board, ploughing enemies to the ground and facing off against quirky bosses on fun tracks - those are all great ingredients in themselves. But the game also has control and action that doesn't exactly feel particularly agile and fluttery. It's more of an idea than it is an execution, but the idea itself is still entertaining enough that it kind of goes a long way. If only the controls and combat, which are obviously very important in this type of game, had been much tighter and more responsive, this would have earned an even higher rating. However, a unique and crazy fun execution takes it a long way.
Conny Andersson · Sep 26, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Gori: Cuddly Carnage has the air of an Insomniac game in some ways, but its lack of refinement and rough edges make for a frustrating journey. He’s cute at least, but the incessant chatter from his talking skateboard gets older quicker than Walter Donovan choosing the wrong Grail. The ugly character design and the mean-spirited upgrades make this a tough game to recommend, let alone play for an extended period. The combat is a bit generic but is fun enough. We just don’t see ourselves replaying this lots to unlock everything.
Ian · Sep 16, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - To say we were pleasantly surprised by Gori would be an understatement. We half expected the game to rely on shock value as its main selling point, but beneath the combination of cuteness and gore, we found a solid hack-and-slash action platformer. The one weakness we found with Gori was that the sheer amount of chaos it keeps blasting at you can get tiresome after an extended play session. In short bursts, however, Gori: Cuddly Carnage delivers a kind of fun we hadn’t seen properly executed in decades.
SebastiaanRaats · Sep 12, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It’s the best game about a toy cat using his sentient hoverboard to dismember killer unicorns you could play this year.
James Stephanie Sterling · Sep 03, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I wanted to like Gori: Cuddly Carnage more than I did, perhaps my hopes were too high. In the end I found the levels too repetitive for my liking and some technical issues soured my mood. There were some fun parts in the platforming and chase sequences but that’s not enough to be able to highly recommend this game to my friends.
Corey Lyle · Sep 02, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Fast-paced, frenetic, and full of fur, Gori: Cuddly Carnage is one of the best hack-and-slash games around. Its highly-saturated, no-nonsense approach to fun is a fantastic execution for the genre.
Cheri Faulkner · Aug 31, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Everyone can easily hop on a grind rail and travel around, but seasoned gamers will have endless opportunities and reasons to kill and look cool doing it. Even still, it’s not hard at all to button mash one’s way to glory, as long as one remembers where the shield button is from time to time. Expert gamers might be disappointed at how little the higher difficulties add to the mix, but it’s hard to be mad when the base experience is such a sick and sanguine little delight.
