  • I went in really wanting to like Gord, and it has all the hallmarks of a game that I would enjoy. However, Gord’s slow pace and pretty punishing difficulty (even on normal) coupled with problematic controls prevent you from being able to get fully absorbed in a world which really intrigues.

  • Overall, Gord is a little rough around the edges and maybe a little too unforgiving, but not impossible. With its incredibly rich story to experience and diverse mechanics, you’ll feel the struggle as much as your tribe will feel it every step of the way until you can reach the Golden Route in Lysatia. However, you’ll need to survive the horrors standing in your way while uncovering a darker plot.

  • Gord is an interesting and, at times, good, albeit flawed, survival city-builder mixed with action RPG and strategy elements. The atmosphere is excellently done, but this is countered by the sanity mechanics taking too much from the rest of the game. Almost every positive has a negative. The character development mechanics bring a fundamentally broken inventory system. The excellent monster development introduces a few that are just outright broken. The (sometimes) interesting campaign brings a near-opaque element of worldbuilding, requiring much side-reading as names are unceremoniously thrown at you. All in all, Gord isn't a bad game, and while I can have a decent time of it, there are too many flaws to recommend it universally; hardcore strategy fans may apply.

  • The storyline is interesting, and the world-building is top-notch, even with a handful of strange bugs left around the place. Any dark fantasy or strategy fan needs to play this one, though fans of Cozy-em-ups like Palia might want to stay away.

  • Gord isn’t the deepest of city builders, and its campaign can sometimes feel like an extended tutorial, but nevertheless, it provides an engaging mix of city building and exploration. With its sanity system and pesky Horrors that need to be dealt with, there’s not much else like this around. Jump into its Custom Scenario mode with both feet, and you’ll likely a find a game that will eat up hours of your time.

  • Gord shows a lot of promise and is certainly enticing for those who like the genre. Unfortunately, it also needs a few improvements and tweaks, namely with unit behavior and pathing, to lessen any frustrations that you might experience.

Gord is a single player, adventure strategy title set in a grim fantasy world inspired by Slavic folklore. The unique survival, quest, and city-builder elements will keep players on their toes as they play through the procedurally generated scenarios of developing societies, eerie forbidden lands, and remarkable mythical creatures. Players complete quests and manage a populace whose personal stories and well-being impact the fate of the settlement.

  • Gord is a pretty neat take on both the strategy and survival genres, with some particularly impressive production values (namely its amazing soundtrack), but it’s also hardly a game that can be replayed in an arcade-like fashion like most RTS titles for PC. It is quite punitive with its harsh sanity setbacks, tough enemies and slow-paced gameplay.

  • Gord is a richer and more complex game than it first appears. There are interesting layers of moral ambiguity and mental health to consider. Gord is a dark Slavic folk tale in survival/RTS-game disguise. Its mechanics and systems add up to an engaging gameplay experience. For a modest entry price, Gord provides a lot of entertainment, an engaging story and plenty of replay value via customizable scenarios.

  • Gord does have a certain moody atmosphere, and there are a couple of smaller ideas that show promise, such as how you can assign scouts to be torchbearers for your workers, even though it's rarely an efficient use of hands. Beyond that, though, there's little here that hasn't been done better elsewhere, and the game never feels like it effectively grapples with its own subject.

About the game

Hold Your Ground is a wave defence custom scenario. Defend your gord against increasingly stronger waves of enemies. Prepare your defences and brace for the coming onslaught! Gord is a dark-fantasy, adventure-strategy game set in a hostile, forsaken land inspired by Slavic mythology. Besieged by vile creatures, you must build to survive. But to prevail, you must conquer the darkness beyond the gates. On the orders of the King, you are charged with striking out to make your mark on an untamed world—building and growing settlements in the face of resistance from raiders, monsters and more. Take command of the Tribe of the Dawn and embrace the ethical complexity of leadership as you shepherd the community — their safety and sanity are your responsibility. Protect them from hunger, disease and trauma. Nurture their faith and train them for battle. In return, they will pledge their loyalty and lay down their lives. In a land that lusts for blood, every family will learn sacrifice. While the gord offers respite, the darkness does not rest. You must prepare your party, find the courage to explore these forsaken lands, lead the conquest, and carve a path that will shape the kingdom. Wretched creatures and malevolent deities await you, but powerful incantations and skilled combatants give you a fighting chance to bring light to the darkness.
