  • Good sequels strike a balance between reproducing familiar systems and introducing new features. Rage Burst shares many similarities with Resurrection, to the degree that you wouldn’t be blamed for mistaking the former for an expansion pack of the latter at a glance. But Rage Burst is bolstered by a beefed-up combat system and scores of stylish, powerful loot, making frequent, sometimes repetitive questing, more enjoyable than it was in Resurrection.

Despite its flaws, God Eater 2 Rage Burst is a pretty fun game to play, with a fun cast of characters and a fast paced combat engine. If it had a larger player base on the PC for the multiplayer component to thrive, it would have been an easy game to recommend. However, as it stands now, I can only speak of this title as a single player experience and as such, its leaves much to be desired.

  • Unfortunately God Eater 2: Rage Burst just drips of mundanity. Boring combat, characters, environments... It is not a bad game, just not a particularly good one.

  • God Eater 2: Rage Burst is a monster of a game that any fan of the monster-hunting genre will enjoy. It can be a bit difficult to get into, but once you have figured out what is going on and start to master the various systems that are on offer you will be hooked - and have a hundred hours of Aragami-slaying ahead of you to enjoy!

  • It has some other issues that can grate at times, such as an unwieldy camera and controls that can seem convoluted, but on the whole it offers absorbing action-RPG gameplay with a great deal of content. That being said however, whilst fans of the original are sure to lap this up, those new to the genre may find Toukiden: Kiwami a more polished alternative on the PS4.

  • God Eater 2: Rage Burst proves that without a shadow of a doubt, the series deserves a home on the console. The great depth, compelling combat and interesting enemies provide an fantastic counterpoint to the Monster Hunter brand, while also providing an exciting new sandbox for players to explore. Unfortunately, there are plenty of shortcoming associated with mediocre port work that prevent this iteration from fulfilling its full potential.

  • The characters were flat but not cringe-inducing. The combat was repetitive but showed nuance as I dug more into Blood Arts. The graphics were passable, if not wholly unpleasant. God Eater 2: Rage Burst is comfort food with a controller, bland but filling. It may not be the best Thanksgiving, but I can see why some kids call it their favorite holiday.

  • Whatever the case, though, God Eater 2: Rage Burst inadvertently feels less like a sequel to God Eater Resurrection than a very substantial expansion, becoming a refinement of what came "before" than a genuine step forward. While it's impossible to deny the mechanical improvements in the game, many players' enjoyment of it will largely hinge on how much more God Eater they wanted to play, or if this is the only one available to them.

  • An argument can be made that God Eater 2: Rage Burst is the most polished entry in the series, collecting all the gameplay content into a single release while adding new features like the Blood Arts, some new maps, and new costumes. It is far superior to its original PSP version, but it only takes a small step as a sequel. The series needs to take a leap if it wants to compete. Fans should definitely pick this up, but newcomers would be better off testing the waters with God Eater Resurrection first.

  • Visually, God Eater 2: Rage Burst doesn’t present anything phenomenal, but instead offers a solid and stable experience. Nothing revolutionary, but also nothing that shames itself. It plays in its safe zone and sticks to it through and through. While I didn’t appreciate the 3D graphics a whole lot, the anime stills are what got me really loving the visuals. It’s a nice improvement from the previous instalment and I hope more of it pops up from time to time. Regardless, gameplay is fluid, crisp, and clear.
