  • Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is a game with a worthwhile message and well thought out mechanics – but we sadly can’t fully recommend this Switch port until the performance issues are ironed out.

  • Gibbon: Beyond the Trees unfortunately not really a recommendation on Switch. While the visual style is truly gorgeous and you feel as if you’re actually controlling a gibbon, the game just doesn’t hold up even for the short time you’ll spend with it.

  • Gibbon: Beyond the Trees combines gorgeous painterly visuals, and fantastic swinging mechanics, with an urgent and emotional story told with sensitivity. Sadly a couple of performance issues hold back this lovely game, leaving it a few monkeys short of a zoo.

  • Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is not very long. It lasts about an hour, but that's okay. Or it's enough, rather. In that time, the player has travelled through lots of gorgeous environments, each telling a story that firmly leaves its mark. I know things about gibbons now that I didn't know the day before yesterday, and I've taken the opportunity to read a bit about the species and the fact that we all need to help each other to preserve it. In that way, Broken Rule's latest iPhone adventure is a very successful one, spreading a sensible, important message without ramming it down the throat of the player.

  • A slight but impactful piece of work, Gibbon: Beyond the Trees blends engaging gameplay and a vital ecological message seamlessly, all while being gorgeous to look at and listen to. It's a powerful, polished package that has almost nothing wrong with it.

  • Gibbon: Beyond the Trees has a singular problem that rears its ugly head in many indie games: I simply wish that there was more of it. The base is very solid, the message is important and what parts are good are indeed VERY good. It’s just a shame that it didn’t push its gameplay a little further forward. It is an excellent short story and a stunning visual experience, but just short of a truly fulfilling gaming experience.

  • Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is another mechanically simple but heartfelt tale from a small studio that, on this occasion, definitely had something to say. And I think it’s that message, coupled with seeing these animals displaced from their colour-rich element, that makes this game hit surprisingly hard. I wouldn’t say that the Switch version is the optimal way to experience Gibbon: Beyond the Trees, but its brevity lends itself well to a handheld.
