- Gears Tactics takes the series' trademark high-intensity action and successfully transplants it to a turn-based tactical format. By stripping out a lot of the expected resource management and downtime inherent in the tactics genre - focusing instead on keeping you on the ground and in the face of the Locust as much as possible - it gives itself a uniquely high-tempo flavour whilst managing to imbue encounters with much of the non-stop brutal and bloody action fans of the franchise know and love.
PJ O'Reilly · Jun 15, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Gears Tactics is certainly not without its issues, most notably in its mission structure, but nonetheless Splash Damage has created a very solid strategy game that offers a lengthy campaign, beautiful visuals, and fun gameplay mechanics that manage to stay true to the Gears of War franchise.
Jonathan Paris · Nov 26, 2020 Reviewed on Series X|S - So, is Gears Tactics worth your time? The short answer: yes. Its finely crafted tactical battles are worth the price of admission (especially for fans of the series), but it’s worth noting that the lack of any strategic dimension is a serious drawback. Still, despite these hiccups and missed opportunities, fans of both the turn-based tactics genre and the franchise proper will find something to like in Gears Tactics.
Timothy Borsilli · May 27, 2020 Reviewed on PC - Despite my gripes with the simple mission progression and ungainly inventory management, these aspects only slightly detract from the deep, tactical gameplay and high production values throughout. Gears Tactics is a great fit for the IP and its gameplay complexity matches – and sometimes surpasses – that of other long-established IPs in the genre.
Andrew Logue · May 27, 2020 Reviewed onRead full review - Gears Tactics has managed to capture the essence of the Gears franchise and move it into an entirely new genre. The fun and fast-paced tactics-based gameplay is perfectly mixed with all the hallmarks of the Gears series with very few downsides. Hopefully this isn’t just a one-off experience and we will see more of Gears Tactics in the future, maybe with deeper customisation and progression system.
Leo Faria · May 04, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Gears Tactics dabbles in a territory that is not quite the same as the XCOM games, but not the same as the standard Gears of War fare. We were not only impressed with the visuals of the game, but also with the original storyline and the prequel setting this spin-off uses to attach itself to the main series. While optimization and a few control errors might still bar the way to a perfect score, we were extremely impressed with this game, its mechanics, its atmosphere, and its overall quality. If you love the Gears franchise, but also like turn-based strategy games, this one will not disappoint.
Ibuki · May 01, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Gears Tactics is a fantastic game. The XCOM fans will have a ball with it and maybe even some Gears fans will get into the strategy genre. Who knows? Either way, Splash Damage has created a fine tactical game that fans will enjoy and have a great time with, while not sacrificing the skill wall and difficulty. It is a game I wholeheartedly recommend.
Drew Leachman · Apr 28, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It feels and looks like a Gears game, from the stupidly overly-macho Gears themselves and their incessant grunting, to the continuous and gory chainsaw kills. If that’s your thing and you’d like an easy entry into turn-based game-play then yes, get this game, play it on an easy difficulty and completely ignore the micromanagement needed through the weapon and squad modifier process. Like the other Gears games, it’s a pretty, if brainless game.
XboxEra Staff · Apr 28, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Lengthy and populated by familiar and violent Gears of War moments of triumph, Gears Tactics suffers a bit in the areas of story and character and repetitive mission structure. In most ways, however, Gears Tactics is a refreshing and unexpected take on the Gear of War saga.
Mark Steighner · Apr 28, 2020 Reviewed on PC - There’s a lot to love here about Gears Tactics, and it somehow manages to almost flawlessly blend the genre of one game with another one’s universe and characters with great execution. Yes, there are some issues, and they can be quite annoying, but in the end these won’t detract you from the sheer amount of enjoyment you will experience. It’s not perfect, but it’s damn good, surprisingly good. Now give me more, please.
