- The game looks really great and has a deliberately brighter and more varied color palette than most of the previous games. While I think the open-world stuff is flat and could have been way better, there are moments out there in the nothingness that just look straight-up incredible, including a late-game weather sequence that, despite not being great gameplay, was worth seeing a couple of times just for the visuals alone.
Jeff Gerstmann · Oct 22, 2019 Reviewed onRead full review - As a multiplayer experience, Gears 5 offers up a wide variety of options, and something is sure to please almost every type of player. There are some rough edges, especially with the way character upgrades are handled, but the core gameplay is solid and satisfying. Combined with the campaign, Microsoft and the Coalition have given players an amazing value, especially if you are getting the title via Game Pass. It may not be perfect, but it'll provide hours of fun, and that's what matters.
Adam Pavlacka · Oct 07, 2019 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Gears 5 breathes a lot of life into a franchise that desperately needed it. Meaningful changes and additions to the campaign are more than welcome. As much as I love all the new systems, they don’t always feel fully fleshed out, but the direction excites me a lot. The plethora of PvE and PvP modes is mind boggling and there is enough content here to keep you hooked for a very long time.
Jordan Hawes · Oct 02, 2019 Reviewed onRead full review - Gears 5 is the best multiplayer suite in the series. The versus mode is as great as ever and it feels like they have finally made it so every weapon feels useful. The map selection is very good with promise of more to come. Arcade mode is a fun way to get introduced to the series, and has some merit for series veterans as well.

Add to that the most content, be it characters, maps, or many cosmetics, will be free or earnable with in-game currency, and you've got a player-friendly system that still leaves space for the "whales" to buy into some content and keep the studio working for the betterment of the whole.
Mark Delaney · Sep 18, 2019 Reviewed onRead full review - Gears 5 is another successful entry in the series. The story is still very interesting and the overall gameplay formula remains untouched as it simply worked for the previous games, and it still does today. The only big changes are the addition of some free-roaming elements and the scavenging you’ll do to upgrade your drone. These changes aren’t for everyone and mess with the otherwise perfect tempo of the series. Nonetheless, even if you don’t like the addition of some extra freedom in your Gears (of War) series, this entry is still a great continuation of the franchise.
Ibuki · Sep 18, 2019 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - The improvements on the Gears formula seem to never end, from characters to combat to game modes. Gears 5 contains something for everyone. One rather important gripe with the title, though, is for those not familiar with the franchise. This game is very much a love letter to existing fans as it adds layers of highly sought after content. Newcomers to the series could easily be overwhelmed as the game focuses heavily on nostalgia.
Richard Flint · Sep 14, 2019 Reviewed on XB1 - Gears 5's campaign is the best the series has seen, and Escape mode is a brilliant new addition. It's fun to play, beautiful to look at, and full of some of the best characters the series has ever seen.
Samuel Guglielmo · Sep 12, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The Coalition has achieved a lot with Gears 5. The writing and action often rivals the best moments in the series, even surpassing its predecessors at times. The overall package is the most robust Gears has ever seen. But, the big structural alteration feels like an unequivocal misstep. Gears 5 is a rousing success, but it could've done without the needless change.
Brett Makedonski · Sep 11, 2019 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Gears 5’s veritable horde of multiplayer modes is the best package the series has delivered yet. The excitement of welcome additions like the new chaotic Arcade Versus and the unpredictable Escape maps mixes with timeless classic thrills like getting awesome Gnasher kills to take out enemy leaders in Versus and claiming close victories in Horde. It all refines and expands upon the series’ already diverse range of ways to play. And while there's a good level of depth to Gears 5's combat, even if you choose not to indulge fully in it you and your friends can still have a great time anyway.
