  • Freedom Wars may be another hunting game on the Vita, but it's by far one of the best. It screams AAA production with standout graphics, solid audio, unique gameplay mechanics and a fresh story line - bringing them to you in a one of a kind package that only Japan could come up with, but with an execution typical of the Western big shots. If you're going to buy one Vita game this year, this wouldn't be a bad choice at all.

  • Every action in the meat of the game just feels good, especially when you join up with three other people online to take down missions or even pit yourself against other teams. Once you get the hang of the complex controls and slight camera issues, you're in for a breathless, exhilarating time staring down giant robots, outmaneuvering your rivals, and rescuing your betters. You may be battling for your freedom, Sinner, but you may not want this battle to end once you get going.

  • Thanks to its unique tone and approach to gameplay, Freedom Wars manages to distance itself from Monster Hunter, yet it’s difficult not to compare the two. ...Though Freedom Wars’ appeal is limited, there will doubtlessly be many who find themselves hooked. For them, the game has a lot to offer, even beyond the limitless hours of content thanks to a suite of online features. Those who aren’t willing to put in the time, however, may find themselves short-changed.

Fighting Freedom Wars’ huge Abuctor enemies is a tough challenge with excellent rewards, but the same can’t be said of the irritating smaller enemies. Outside of battle, a successful network of in-game systems kept me engaged, from buying Entitlements to whittling down my epic million-year sentence to upgrading and augmenting gear. There's constantly a hook that keeps me coming back for more, even if it means sitting through another chunk of tedious story.

The striking visual style, the intriguing premise that’s expertly tied in to the gameplay- it all felt like it was going to be a special experience. But at the end of day, the poor balancing of difficulty and dubious mechanical design choices makes this one really hard to enjoy and even harder to recommend.

  • Freedom Wars has an intriguing setting, solid hunting action, insane amounts of customization, fully supported co-op, PVP, all through a beautiful presentation. There are numerous hours of content to keep you coming back again and again. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but, by that same token, there's nothing else quite like it. It's the PS Vita's biggest release this year, and likely will be for some time. If you own a PlayStation Vita or TV, you'd be crazy to pass up Freedom Wars.

  • Between the branching and character-rich single player campaign, a wealth of mission choices, and gobs of loot to gather either to equip in new load outs or to customize the visual look of your hero or heroine, Freedom Wars doesn’t skimp on content. More importantly, it did force me to think a bit more critically about the narrative, which for some reason always surprises me on PlayStation Vita.

  • Freedom Wars is a solid action RPG that's put behind bars by a slew of elements that end up lacking. While none of these flaws ruin the experience, they definitely put a dampener on some of the game's best qualities, such as its deliciously dystopian premise and intense boss battles. Although it doesn't deserve total freedom, this year's biggest Vita title certainly shouldn't be subjected to a life of servitude either.

  • Freedom Wars is a decidedly solid action-RPG. Its fantastic premise and intense thematic elements will engage those willing to put up with its weaker elements. ...Players who take the time to fight through Freedom Wars‘ confusing menu system will find some of the deepest RPG elements the Vita has seen in a fair amount of time. Freedom Wars isn’t an unmissable gem, but there’s enough good here to overshadow the bad.

  • Freedom Wars is not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination. Its flaws are obvious, constantly present and, in the case of the storyline, disheartening. However, the gameplay itself is good enough to lift its quality above average. For a consumer base so hungry for unique exclusives as my fellow PS Vita owners, Freedom Wars is a welcome addition to the system’s library. I’d be hard pressed to call it an amazing game, but those willing to accept its faults and enjoy a solid grind will absolutely get their money’s worth.

    About the game

In the not-too-distant future, atmospheric pollution has devastated the earth and resources have become scarce. Harsh new penal communities have formed in order to survive. The communities, known as Panopticons, battle to secure what precious few resources remain. Born into incarceration, you are forced to fight for your freedom in dangerous missions. Work together with up to 7 other players in a frenetic blend of action and strategy as you fight to rescue civilians in possession of valuable rival Panopticon knowledge. Complete your missions, reduce your sentence, earn your freedom.
