  • It is flawed, being way too slow before it becomes really interesting, not to mention some performance issues, but it does indeed succeed at what it was developed for.

  • There will be plenty of corny stories about rebuilding a world from the ashes of the people we were before. Where Floodland has a leg up is in its subtlety. You aren’t constantly talking about who you want to be and how you want to run your apocalypse town. You are showing who you are by how you build it.

  • Floodland's biggest selling point is its unique setup, and for the most part, that helps it stand apart from other city-builders. There's an undeniable learning curve as you grapple with dozens of different systems and resources, but if you can overcome that, there's a satisfying core gameplay loop underneath.

  • Floodland is an exhaustive (and exhausting) game of survival, expansion and politics. Its exploration element is compelling, and it can be satisfying keeping on top of all the mounting logistics problems. Sadly, with its unlikeable talking heads, it just didn’t give me enough of a reason to care.

  • Floodland is a city builder that triumphs because it focuses on its citizens as much as the city. A strong narrative both in its story and in your interactions with the clans means constant decision-making that'll always make you think in a way that city builders rarely do.

  • Floodland has an interesting premise and intricately linked systems. Unfortunately, a campaign run usually leads to roadblocks, strict requirements, or unruly clan behavior.

  • It lacks a certain spark that would make it great, and some unfortunate bugs let it down in the mid-late game, but I look forward to returning to the floodlands once these teething issues are ironed out.

  • Overall, Floodland is an absolute must-play for fans of the survival simulator genre. The game runs smoothly, controls well, and has enough depth in it to keep players coming back for more. The bleak world of this post-climate change disaster is immersive and beautiful looking, and Floodland is also a great beginner-sim for players who may be new to the genre, with its classic research trees, simple mechanics, and well-crafted tutorial are easily understood at any skill level.

  • At this point, the game was not running perfectly, there were a few episodes of low FPS and a few minor issues. The mechanics look deep and engaging, its graphics are solid and engaging, and the story seems to mesh well with conflicting decisions and anxiety to control.

  • Floodland is a great survival sim that constantly forces you to think about your actions and make tough choices. Research and influence tokens are not given freely, and you’ll often need to make difficult decisions on what to build and invent next.

About the game

Unite Humanity - Shape Society The climate change was a catalyst for a sucession of events that led to the destruction of our world; rising sea levels have innundated the coasts. Only you can help humanity survive by leading your band of survivors on a path to redemption. Starting with a lost bunch of survivors, you need to scavange resources, rediscover technology and maintain the peace between differing factions as you strive to rebuild society. Explore and Exploit The world - as you know it - has gone, replaced by islands, swamps and isolated groups of survivors. Gathering scarce resources, you need to explore the world - island by island - helping those you can and dealing with those who do not share your vision of the future. Grow Your Colony There's more to a city than just people. Food, shelter, water, health, security - the list is long and varied. Technology to be researched along a branching Tech-Tree, buildings upgraded and specialists to train. It's down to you to make sure all these needs are fulfilled; a job made all the harder with limited resources, space and labour to complete these tasks. You Are the Law A society is only as good as its laws; it's up to you to define them. Will you usher in a new utopian age of equality or is your future a benign dictatorship? Not every group shares your vision and the choices you make can have a profound impact on the future of your settlement. A common goal will make your society more productive than one at loggerheads with itself; you need to define and choose your legal evolution and which route to follow on the Law-Tree but - as with all things - there are always consequences. Unlimited Playthroughs Each game is different; maps, events and make up of the world are randomly generated, allowing unique playthroughs every time.
