  • Updating an old game is always something of a balancing act as developers work to maintain what made the original game great, while bringing it up to speed with modern conventions. Unfortunately, Flashback HD fails on both accounts. It maintains a lot of things about the original that don’t really work today, and it added things that don’t feel like modernizations so much as extremely bland, generic video game touches.

  • As much as it was an enjoyable exercise in nostalgia, compared to the standards set by today’s games Flashback falls short. The bottom line is this game borders on being technically flawed. Story doesn’t make up for this or the shortcomings of elementary gameplay. If you are looking for a 2D action game like this you are better served to check out Shadow Complex.

  • Flashback is a tremendous disappointment, and a reminder that fond memories are often better left as just that: memories. The original game is included in emulated form with each copy of HD, but it's easier to appreciate for its influence on future games than it is to enjoy the act of playing it. Just skip this particular excursion into the past.

  • It would be an easy joke to say I wish I could erase my memories of playing this game and stow them in my own ocean-bound holocube. But I need to remember; someday, someone might ask if that Flashback remake was any good, and I’ll have to draw on those memories before responding with a 30-second-long “No.”

  • The original game is included here, but for reasons I may never understand, the developers saw fit to chuck it into the actual 3D title scene, in a CRT cabinet. It looks cool, but well, playing anything on it is a bit tacky. This whole game had potential to be a great remake, a spiritual successor, and so much more, but ultimately, fans of the original will want their memories back, and new players will want to forget it all together.

  • I typically frown on comparing games in reviews, but considering this was supposed to be a faithful remake of what’s largely considered a classic, its crucial to note its shortcomings. Flashback isn’t entirely bad — I even caught myself having fun on several occasions — but those looking for something as striking as the original Flashback likely wont find it here.

  • It all just makes no sense. The original Flashback was beautiful in its simple cutscenes and nuanced storytelling, relying on imagination, solid platforming and environmental exploration. In this modern remake, the original vision is lost in favor of trying to reach a new generation of potential fans with some half-baked ideas on what would make A Cool Sci-Fi Game™. And in the process of doing that, Flashback has lost its identity entirely.

  • Flashback is a disappointing game with little to offer. The best thing to do is to wipe your memory of this remake.

Unfortunately, whilst competent in execution and steeped in nostalgia, this remake of the 1992 classic Flashback doesn’t quite have the firepower or ingenuity to measure up in its own right against the current standard in platformers.
