  • It really is a pretty straight forward and rewarding game. While it's in no way perfect, it's a completely serviceable roguelike for its price and for the Vita. If you can't get enough of this genre, then by all means consider Flame Over. Even though it doesn't really set itself apart from the crowd, it's got enough there to garner a following and perhaps deliver on future iterations or changes to improve upon the established formula.

  • The bottom line is, Flame Over can be fun to play, but you need to have a lot of patience – and a lot of skill. There are a few problems that hold it back from being an essential title, but if you like a challenge – and if you like firemen – then it’s worth a go, but unless you’re really determined, it’s likely to get old pretty quickly.

  • Perseverance pays off for those that wish to take on and tackle the burning inferno that is Flame Over. With tons of replay value and gameplay that will challenge most, Laughing Jackal's fire fighting pyro-guelike is a sure-fire hit for the handheld!

  • You'll need real perseverance to get the most out of Flame Over, but once you get to grips with the game, it'll grow on you like an out-of-control inferno. Packing plenty of replay value, this is hard to put down once you straddle its early hurdles – and while we're not convinced that everyone will be willing to put the work in, the few that do will be fighting fires for some time.

  • It’s a small project, obviously, and it’ll likely carry a small price tag. For PS Vita owners, this game is a pleasant little surprise. Its twin-stick controls work great on the handheld, there’s no forced touchscreen use, its art style and music work well and its core gameplay is solid for a while. Flame Over isn’t perfect. It is, however, fun.

  • Flame Over is never going to set the world on fire, but it's a deceptively enjoyable roguelike with a wholly original spin. It's a shame that the transition to the PS4 hasn't delivered a better learning curve, but this is still the same good game from the Vita – only it looks much better now. Take a bit of time to learn its systems, and this will grow on you like an out-of-control inferno. Just remember to have a bit of patience, or you will get burned.

  • The lack of true variety from floor to floor makes it suffer, and the true randomness found in all the best roguelikes feels a bit weakened as fire is the only foe to be tackled throughout. It is an enjoyable distraction, but is nowhere near as insanely addictive as The Binding of Isaac or Spelunky. Flame Over is a fairly enjoyable distraction, but fails to bring the necessary heat to make this a must play.

  • Some niggles will frustrate you for the first hour or two. Civvies not following you fast enough, then dropping off, or not making it around a sharp corner. The loading times can grate a little too. Despite these flaws, you'll keep being drawn in to play again. You know that your next run will be your best. Before you know it, you'll have runs lasting the better part of an hour.

  • Flame Over takes a shot at a little explored area in games and has some interesting ideas. The way fire spreads is pretty good, but the rest of the game falls a little short with the real killer being repetition. It’s just not random enough to maintain interest for too long, and that’s a fatal flaw in a roguelike with permadeath.

  • A deceptively tactical twin stick shooter with relentlessly entertaining gameplay, a few minor niggles are nowhere near enough to prevent Flame Over ranking up there with some of the best roguelike titles available right now. A charming and well-constructed take on the twin stick shooter, Flame Over endears itself greatly with easy to play, yet difficult to master mechanics which neatly avoid the frustration usually associated with roguelike titles.
