  • It’s not said enough – sometimes, it’s OK for games to get “fixed” after launch. Developers aren’t always able to control their release schedules, and when a game is better and more robust a year later, that’s a win for everyone. Look at No Man’s Sky, for example. In the case of FFXV, it was already an excellent game.

  • All in all, Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition is the best console-to-pc port that Square Enix has produced to date. On top of that, the Royal Edition is the best version of Final Fantasy XV – so far, and even if only just. The route taken to get here has been a bumpy one, needlessly long with and perhaps without the most efficient direction, but the journey here has left us at a better place than we were at starting out. We know that there’s still several miles of road left to go though, so it seems like this trip has not quite found its end just yet.

  • Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition is the only, true definitive edition of the Square Enix Japanese Role-Playing Game, thanks to the superior graphics quality and several gameplay and story enhancements, which are also included in the consoles' Royal Edition. The open world nature of the first half of the game may not be for JRPG fans, especially for those who prefer a more traditional approach, but this shouldn't stop anybody from experiencing Noctis' journey the way it was meant to be experienced. The true King is finally here, and Eos can finally rejoice.

  • The visual improvements here show that the Windows Edition is the definitive version of Final Fantasy 15: it has never looked better, and mod support suggests an exciting future ahead for the game. It's a shame that FF15 doesn't recapture the depth of the series’ past entries, and games like The Witcher 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 really highlight the weaknesses in the sidequests here. This road trip, though, is still well worth taking.

  • Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition isn't the perfect PC port by any means. It has its quirks, but the advantages over the console editions wipes those out in my mind. Not only does it have all the content available on console to this point at a reasonable price, but it also has mod tools coming and Steam Workshop support already implemented. It seems like the team behind the game, and Square Enix's leadership will continue to support and promote this game into the future too, so there's plenty of goodies in store down the line.

  • Overall, Final Fantasy XV is a very polished and fun game to play. However, it still feels lackluster and lacking in a sense of cohesion and impact for a project that took so long to be produced. Combat is enjoyable and there was some interesting level design sprinkled throughout making the game not feel like a complete waste of time. Yet, the story and the world left something to be desired even with the closure bringing after credit scenes.

  • This is why Final Fantasy XV, despite significant and glaring problems, is still a lovely time that managed to make me like Final Fantasy again. It’s a character piece, and the characters we spend our time with are fully realized and play off each other so well. It’s a lighter journey that nonetheless knows when to get serious, spurred by a charismatic nemesis and a quartet of lovable, beautiful boys.

  • Final Fantasy XV is the rare game that transcends its genre to become an appealing product to anyone who is a fan of gaming. While a few issues keep it from being considered “perfect,” Final Fantasy XV is one of the “must-play” games of 2016 and is an incredibly enjoyable experience from beginning to end.

  • Final Fantasy XV is a true return to form for the series. The main story of the game is passable, but surpassed by the fantastic tale of Noctis and his three friends, Gladiolus, Prompto and Ignis. The world they live in, the interconnectivity and just how alive it feels makes for a great game, warts and all.

  • Even when it stumbles, Final Fantasy 15's ambitious open-world, fast-paced combat, and the humanity of its four leads make it a fascinating adventure to behold.

About the game

The only crystal left to the world lies in the Kingdom of Lucis. Upon striking a peace with the garrison state of Niflheim, Lucis rejoices in having at last brought the cold war to a close. Their celebrations, however, are premature. Under the guise of amity, Niflheim dispels the anti-armament runewall and launches a full-scale invasion of the kingdom. The peaceful lives Crown Prince Noctis and his entourage once knew are consumed by the flames of war as they struggle to mount a resistance.
