  • Final Fantasy V is a criminally underrated Final Fantasy game, and the Pixel Remaster is a great version of it.

  • The story in Final Fantasy V is one that I enjoy and has its fair share of wonderful moments, it’s not quite at the level of Final Fantasy IV or VI. The music is naturally stellar, with delightful new arrangements as well as the superb original soundtrack. Like with every Pixel Remaster on console, the font issue from the PC and mobile releases is better but not truly fixed. It contributes to a recurring theme that this is so close to being the best version of a classic but it’s just not all the way there.

  • Coming from a newcomer to this criminally underlooked classic, Final Fantasy V captivated me in ways I wasn’t expecting. Even though I cared very little about its admittedly generic story, its insanely addictive Job system, coupled with a handful of quality-of-life improvements stemming from the Pixel Remaster edition won me over like very few JRPGs, either modern or retro, have ever been able to.

  • With a decent story, okay characters, and pretty standard turn-based combat, Final Fantasy V does feel a bit too safe at times, but the expanded job system really ties a lot of the experience together. A forgotten Final Fantasy for many, but one that's still fun to play through.

  • These Pixel Remasters have been wonderful treats for longtime fans and incredibly welcoming to an all-new generation of players going on these adventures for the first time. I wouldn’t call these the definitive ways to experience the games due to the lack of additional content that came with previous versions of the titles, but they are by far the most approachable and easily accessible today. With the helpful tips, additional healing points, and fancy features, they are great versions for folks to sink their teeth into, but I’d also recommend moving onto the GBA versions of FF5 and FF6 after and the PSP version of FF4 if they want more.

  • The job system and the variety it offers is the core of the Final Fantasy V experience, but it has many other good qualities. While there is a healthy amount of drama, there’s also quite a bit of humor and slapstick that keeps the adventure from getting too grim.

  • This is a good version of a great game that shows clearly why Square is highly regarded for their expertise in RPGs. However, as a long-time fan of the game and the series, I sincerely wish they had gone the extra mile into making this version the most comprehensive and definitive edition it deserves.

  • As much as I loved playing through the Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster, I can’t call it the definitive version. A definitive version would have the GBA bonus content, the PS1 cutscenes, the option to switch graphics and music, and multiple difficulties. But what we have is a beautiful version of a JRPG classic that has not been widely distributed outside of Japan.

  • While the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters aren’t perfect, they’re certainly the best and most convenient ways to play these classic games. The soundtracks are lovingly orchestrated and the pixel art is gorgeous, though the latter does lose some detail in the translation. Each game feels great to play, but I do wish extra content from previous releases or remakes had been included.

  • Final Fantasy V has a unique spirit amongst the other Super Famicom/SNES titles. VI does have some elements of customisation, and IV has its moments of silliness, but the core of V is to embrace the fun and experimentation and lose yourself in the adventure. Sometimes, I forget to do that when I’m playing a video game, particularly a Final Fantasy game. So, for that alone, I’m glad I gave the Pixel Remaster of Final Fantasy V a chance.
