  • In the end, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is an oddity in design and execution. It aims to amend the flaws in Final Fantasy XIII while failing to craft a stable standalone narrative that can stand on its own. There are some good ideas and fun elements in the game that are ultimately obscured in a collage of mediocrity. The Steam port adds another layer to this collage thanks to some improvements over the console versions only to perform inconsistently.

  • XIII-2 is a complicated and inconsistent sequel, then, and one I can only recommend to a subsection of the series’ audience. It is better than XIII. This fixes a lot of its predecessor’s structural problems, focusing on the airtight combat and sensibly dialling up the exploration, but tries its hand at a bunch of new ideas that entirely fail. This feels like a game crafted around a survey of unhappy fans and, as such, is one of the oddest Final Fantasy entries to date.

  • Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the best entry in the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, offering far improved gameplay systems while giving players access to a highly diverse soundtrack and various timelines to explore. While the two protagonists are among the weaker of the franchise, the ability to recruit monsters into your party is a delightful change to the formula. ...Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a step in the right direction for Square Enix, paving the way for future releases from the Japanese giant.

  • Speaking of locations, we were nervous going into the sequel that many of the environments would be recycled from XIII, but XIII-2 features a surprisingly large array of new locales. And the places that are recycled don't feel like they've been thrown in lazily, since it makes sense story-wise that we'd have to revisit some old places, since it's still the same world after all.

  • Scoring Final Fantasy XIII-2 is almost irrelevant. For every person who nods their head whilst reading this review, there will be one wondering just what on earth I’ve been smoking. I absolutely love the game, and found myself totally absorbed in everything it has to offer. The Paradigms system, the monster hunting, even level grinding was enjoyable, encouraging experimentation to put together the best possible team and Paradigms. 2012 has certainly kicked off with a bang.

  • Overall, Final Fantasy XIII-2 offers a lot of gameplay and a great addition to the XIII plot. Even though the graphics weren’t revolutionary like XIII’s and the slight pacing issue still remains, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is very good. Anyone who played and enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII owes it to themselves to pick this up and continue the story of Serah and Lightning.

  • Overall, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a solid game and delivers what the series is generally known for: deep and enjoyable gameplay mixed in with great graphics and an interesting story. Fans of the franchise should be definitely be satisfied while newbies, or those coming back after skipping a few installments, should appreciate what FFXIII-2 is all about.

  • This sequel certainly outdoes the original, which is no great surprise, but Final Fantasy XIII-2 still has a few niggles that hold it back. The story and characters are still pretty bland, with only a few flashes of greatness, and the battle system is fairly one-dimensional. That aside this is certainly a game for fans, with plenty to see and do and a wealth of hidden nooks and crannies to explore. Saddle up your chocobo and go see the sights.

  • FFXIII-2 is a lot like FFXIII and will elicit the same kind of divided response within the gaming community. It is slightly better, all things considered, with a few appreciated improvements, but it certainly isn’t anything that’s going to sway someone who didn’t like FFXIII to begin with.

  • Final Fantasy XIII-2 has a lot of hiccups, and a lot of the time I've spent with this game has been up and down, in terms of likeness. But it has hit more than it has missed, but the problems tend to shine in the darkest of times. Perseverance is another possible name for this game, since the flow of the story is somewhat sporadic, but it's rewarding to do so.
