  • Even with some flaws FIFA 18 on the Switch is a fun experience.

  • The dream of having a proper version of FIFA that you can take outside with you is finally here, except it’s essentially a port of a three-year-old game… Does that really matter? Well, it depends on how desperate you are to play FIFA on a handheld. This is by far the best version of a handheld FIFA, so if that’s all you are after then you are sorted.

  • EA mixes design ideas well in Career mode with team building elements and contracts. It is almost like an MMO crafting system on how you can structure your teams and build your players. These make for a much deeper experience and the player is at the controls the whole time. Enhanced by fantastic cut scenes and cameos of top world class players, you really get into building up your squad.

  • Somehow, EA has managed to refine and hone the modern FIFA formula to an even greater degree with FIFA 18. Last year we questioned what more the developer could possibly do to keep the series from stagnating, and it turns out that making a slew of welcome smaller adjustments across the board can really impact the big picture. Some will roll their eyes, but FIFA 18 is yet another fantastic footie sim -- one that takes the ball from the already great FIFA 17 and runs with it.

  • FIFA 18 on Switch does what it does very well, but it’s hard to ignore just how much is missing. This really is the best FIFA on a portable there has ever been, and the most full featured, but compared to other console versions, it is lacking. Hopefully EA will continue the series on Switch and add some of that content back in, but for now, whether this game is worthwhile will depend on how you like to play it.

  • Reward EA for improving defending and the overall ‘feel’ of FIFA 18, or scold them for going extremely easy on any major innovation? Both, I think. It’s a pretty good release this year; just expect the odd resigned sigh at familiar woes.

  • All in all, though, FIFA 18 on the Nintendo Switch is a really good football game and probably the one we realistically hoped we’d get when it was first announced. Those coming from the other systems might be a little put off because all the bells and whistles aren’t there but most of the important things are, and that’s what matters most.

  • Where PES 2018 excels in regards to the fluid gameplay and marginally better visuals, FIFA 18 brings the licenses and a vast amount of content. EA really needs to fine-tune the controls and tweak the gameplay if they aim to contend with their direct competition, but that’s not to say that FIFA 18 doesn’t handle well at all. This game is a massive step up from every entry in the current gen, and the subtle yet noticeable improvements offer a solid gameplay experience in comparison to previous iterations. FIFA 18 is a gorgeously created representation of the much loved sport that houses a more authentic atmosphere than any other football game to date. It doesn’t matter what you’re coming into this game for, everything from the campaign to each of the well structured modes will easily keep you satisfied until this time next year, and then some.

  • A number of changes big and small all make for a truly refined experience; The Journey portrays an interesting and well-written year in the life of Alex Hunter; Transfers in the career mode have received an incredible overhaul; Beautiful visuals and top-notch production values; Presentation is as stylish and authentic as ever; Matches are much more engaging and tactical than ever before.
