  • Of course, if you’re a devout FEAR-head you probably won’t want to miss out on the familiar experience and progression of the story, but don’t expect anything groundbreaking. However, if you plan to join up with other players, FEAR 3 becomes considerably more interesting.

  • It’s still fun destroying everything standing in my way, especially with my wing man on my flank, but it wouldn’t have killed Day 1 Studios to make the attempt to strike some fear into me. Regardless, anyone looking for a great co-operative shooter should look no further – F.E.A.R. 3 is here.

Much in FEAR 3 is better in concept than execution, and that, sadly, won’t save it from the preowned shelves or stop its servers becoming graveyards

  • Ultimately, FEAR 3 is another game that'll get lost in 2011 for being a bit forgettable. Maybe if it inspired loss of bladder control in the same way the original did - or, better still, how Monolith's Condemned did - it might have been slightly more memorable. FEAR 3 is sadly lacking in the fear department, and has subsequently lost its defining characteristic.

  • Perhaps Fear 3 is horror for the squeamish, but if you're looking for something to scare you enough to keep you up at nights, you best look elsewhere. However, if you are in the mood for a fun and solid shooter with a creepy aesthetic, Fear 3 delivers a viscera filled romp that's worth checking out.

  • Whether you preferred the original F.E.A.R. or its sequel, F.E.A.R. 3 plays to the strengths of neither, almost feeling like a multiplayer spin-off that was begrudgingly upgraded to full-on sequel. There's a categorical compulsion here to play it safe, a mistake that even F.E.A.R. might not be able to return from.

  • It pains me to have to be so harsh, but there's simply no justification for how this game's excellence has been squandered and ultimately ruined. If you can't get your online shit together, don't give me a compromised narrative, because right now, F.E.A.R 3 feels like half a game and one that's simply not worth paying anywhere near full price for.

  • While the horror-shooter concept still works, the latest installment of F.E.A.R. has evolved in ways that are mostly superficial

  • That's a perfect microcosm of what makes FEAR 3 such a departure from the franchise's previous installments -- fear is intrinsically a solitary emotion, but the only worthwhile experiences you can have with FEAR 3 require the participation of a friend or three. With that kind of congregation, any chance for terror is completely diminished; but your chances for excitement are dramatically increased.

  • it’s the core aspects of FEAR 3 that should be the reason you play this game
