  • On the whole, I found last year’s F1 to be enjoyably inoffensive, which is why F1 2014 is such a pleasant surprise. It makes for a great series swansong on PS3 (or, at least, I assume F1 will make the generational leap next year), and is just about the pinnacle of visual presentation for a racer on these tired old gaming boxes we’re still keeping around

  • Hardcore fans may lament the lack of compelling new features but I applaud Codemasters for not rushing to deliver a subpar product on new consoles. Even on now-dated hardware, F1 2014 is still a pretty solid racing experience and a good representation of the sport but I’d be remiss if I didn’t say I can’t wait to see what F1 looks like when it hits the latest consoles.

  • F1 2014 plays to its strengths and doesn’t get bogged down with clutter. While classic F1 races can’t be recreated this year, the career mode is a far more diverse and enjoyable experience. The racing action is more intense than ever before, leading this to be one of most enjoyable F1 games ever created. ...Be sure to pick up F1 2014 if you’re a lapsed fan of the franchise. It does everything right and eliminates the clutter that has hurt past entries in the series.

  • Despite F1 2014's good points, it's hard to get away from the fact that it's little more than an inconsistent update of a great game. The cars are good fun once you get the hang of the new handling model, the visuals are surprisingly sharp, and there's more than enough punishing difficultly on offer for those after a real racing challenge.

  • Underdeveloped, most likely due to the next-gen version coming soon, this game is almost the very definition of a roster update. While it does offer new tracks and successfully replicates the modern F1 experience faithfully, the familiarity and evident lack of fresh ideas is jarring. Simply put, there is very little to recommend in this year’s game. With fewer modes than F1 2013, and with next year’s big update mere months away, this entry finds itself very much stuck on the grid.

  • Never before has Codemasters delivered something so closely resembling a free download from a community modding site. One question remains; one ray of hope. If F1 2014 is the lacklustre McLaren MP4-24 from 2009, hamstrung by a need to focus on yesterday’s hardware, will the next Codemasters F1 game be akin to the Brawn BGP-001, light years ahead of its competition? We can but hope.

  • F1 2014 is ultimately a disappointing release, not because F1 2015 is just around the corner, but because it doesn’t do enough on its own merits to push the game series beyond F1 2013, a game which I already felt was struggling with a degree of stagnation. It’s still fundamentally a good game and the recreation of the sport’s new rules and regulations do help to make driving the cars a slightly fresher challenge....

  • F1 2014 is a fun, accessible and authentic racing sim. But the differences over last year's game are slight and with the classic mode removed, the package it offers is inferior to F1 2013.

  • F1 2014 feels like something that needs to exist while Codemasters works on rebuilding the foundations for next-gen. There’s much less here than in previous entries, so it’s hard to justify picking it up to anyone outside of hardcore F1 fans. F1 2013 now feels like the pinnacle of the series on 360 and PS3, and for those looking for the evolution of F1 games, you’re going to have to wait and see what the developer has up its sleeve in 2015.

  • Like the hardware it's running on, the F1 series is showing its age and seems to be running out of ideas. Fingers crossed that 2015's next-gen edition is the upgrade it needs to be.
