  • Even if you were just there to enjoy randomized rounds of puzzles, the looming threat of failure prevents it from being the same relaxing experience as Bejeweled.Hunters Quest is a poor substitute for Bejeweled at best, and a shameless bit of freemium gouging at worst.

  • Evolve stands as a testament to Turtle Rock's unique approach to online multiplayer, and is one of the most enjoyable competitive and cooperative experiences we've had so far this generation. ...Evolve is as beautiful as it is addictive, and even with its online issues, manages to be one of the best examples of what's possible with the current console hardware.

  • Evolve is somewhat difficult to recommend outside of a fairly limited context. The core gameplay is great, but everything surrounding it is problematic. As Bob says in his second opinion, hunting a monster with a group of friends really is sublime. But its attempts to add value outside of that core mostly fall flat, and its lasting appeal is hurt by the inherently problematic nature of random co-op and the rather shallow pool of available monsters (unless you're willing to shell out the extra money for a Behemoth).

My only concern is fatigue setting in with some players, and the base dwindling. This will kill the game, as playing solo is simply not the route to go. Still, with a healthy amount of content and maps planned I can hope the support continues for months to come. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to the hunt.

  • Evolve was tough to review – a true rollercoaster of emotions. While it’s high points are among the most fun I’ve had in recent memory, its problems and low points ultimately win out. If you have a solid group of five you can count on to play with at all times, Evolve might be worth a look. With some balancing, I could even see Evolve becoming quite popular among the hardcore e-sports types.

  • When Evolve is at its best, it is one of the greatest co-op experiences ever crafted. Few games require so much teamwork and are as satisfying when everything falls into place. Conversely, it can be a complete mess when played with hunters that are incompetent or not playing their position. If you have a group of friends that are willing to put in both the financial and time commitment for Evolve then there is no reason not to buy it.

  • Though its long-term ability to survive has yet to be seen, in the short run that this first-person shooter has been out in the wild, it’s already proven itself as a beast of a different color, and one that certainly will provide thrills and the joy of the hunt for anyone looking to stare right back at it. Evolve is the perfect new breed of multiplayer for the current-gen consoles, and ready or not — here it comes for you.

  • Evolve is one of the best-looking games on PC, blessed with splashy particle effects, smart UI, and monsters worthy of Pacific Rim. But I’m concerned about Evolve’s longevity. At first touch, Turtle Rock’s 4v1 formula has tons of novelty. But without maps that bolster its replay value, or mod support to fill in, I worry about how well Evolve’s paid DLC and Evolve’s planned free map releases will keep pace with players’ fatigue.

  • Evolve is not a bad game, far from it. There is definitely fun to be had here whether it is well coordinated cooperation as the Hunters or wildlife fueled mayhem as the Monster. However after dozens of pre-release awards and tons of hype, it definitely isn’t the beast that we thought it would be.

  • Evolve occasionally brushes against a real breakthrough for Turtle Rock, with its distinctive take on a different kind of multiplayer shooter. New territory always presents new problems, and Evolve doesn't always solve them. But it distinguishes itself from the pack of multiplayer options out there with the flair of something truly different.

    About the game

Evolve is set on Shear, a distant planet located in the "Far Arm" of space, that humanity has traveled to in the distant future. The established colonies, considered the most valuable in this region of space, are soon attacked by malevolent alien Monsters. As the Monsters slaughter the colonists on Shear, a former planet tamer named William Cabot is brought out of retirement to deal with the threat, in order to evacuate the remaining colonists from Shear. In response, Cabot assembles a team of Hunters—consisting of war veterans, psychopaths, professionals, and expendables—to eliminate the Monsters, setting the main conflict of Evolve.
