- Playing through Evoland definitely brings a lot of nostalgia, especially if you’re played older action-adventure games. The 8-bit graphics look nice, and the writing is tongue-in-cheek. Gameplay is quite fun. The on-screen controls could be much smoother and feel a little wonky. Evoland is a rather short adventure.
Daniel Adrian Sanchez · Mar 11, 2016 Reviewed on - Evoland is chock full of references to classic game series, and each one’s gameplay style if fully represented, despite its clunky controls.
Tyler Rosen · Feb 23, 2015 Reviewed on AndRead full review - If you like RPGs or Zelda-likes well enough to enjoy a pleasant, short meta-commentary, you'll have a good time here. You should also be interested if you're the sort of gamer that likes games that focus on delivering a unique experience rather than pure mechanical achievement. If you're looking for the next role-playing epic, you'll want to steer clear, and if slow-moving main characters drive you nuts, you might want to watch a gameplay video first. It rides hard on the novelty of its gimmick, but when a gimmick is as good as Evoland's, the outcome is still a pretty cool game.
Shaun Musgrave · Feb 09, 2015 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - The combat looks like the games it is based on, but misses so many elements of what made combat in those games great. Evoland was an opportunity to open the genre to new eyes, but ends up not being enjoyable enough on its own to be worth playing for most people new to the genre. Evoland is great in its homage, but a poor effort standing alone and a game that struggles to remain fun throughout.
Petey A.M. · Apr 25, 2013 Reviewed on PCRead full review - ...its short length means the conceit never tires, and it does provide a rather brilliant excuse for the game beneath being rather unoriginal.
Edge Staff · Apr 19, 2013 Reviewed on PC - It takes only a few hours to finish Evoland, but you couldn't call the game too short; because it lacks any soul of its own, its trotting-out of one reference after another grows tired and predictable well before the credits roll. Evoland doesn't try to surprise you, to subvert your expectations, or even to capture what really made the games it's mimicking so great. It sets out only to remind you of earlier games. To that end, it succeeds, but it's hardly the most heroic of undertakings.
Carolyn Petit · Apr 10, 2013 Reviewed on PCRead full review - While a few of the referential jokes cross over into cringe territory, most of them hit the mark, and there are a few little gags that really encourage a smirk, if not a real-life, out-loud chuckle. It's incredibly difficult to fault what's on offer, but it's quite easy to lament what isn't there -- chiefly a lot more of what's on offer.
Jim Sterling · Apr 04, 2013 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Its most rewarding moments come from seeing your own gaming history reflected in its lovingly crafted progression. If the few references I’ve mentioned here are at all meaningful to you—and they are paltry compared to the plethora of “o-ho!” moments Evoland gifts to fans—then don’t miss this one, lest your past gamer self haunt you forever alongside Kefka’s ghost.
Jillian Werner · Apr 04, 2013 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It's difficult to control, the battles are uninteresting, and the enemies don't stand out. Playing Evoland is like keeping company with a hero that dressed up their friends for an epic battle, but forgot to outfit themselves before the showdown. It's a shame such an ambitious idea falls flat.
Nadia Oxford · Feb 09, 2015 Reviewed on iOS, AndRead full review - Evoland is a good education for people who missed out on classic gaming, and will evoke forgotten memories in more practiced gamers. Unfortunately, despite a few good moments, there's almost no challenge. Clever and creative, but more of a love letter to classic games than a well formed game of its own, it's a niche title made to appeal to a niche audience.
