  • Europa Universalis 4 too often struggles to foster the level of appreciation it deserves, but the potential for historical "what-ifs" will keep any interested players busy for a very long time. It may be a bit rough around the edges, lacking the kind of spit-shine we've come to expect from better-funded fare like Civilization V, but the core experience is one that encourages a sandbox approach to history.

  • Paradox Development Studio has shown that it understands grand strategy like no other studio. Europa Universalis IV is the defining game in the genre, laying out the whole world in front of players and just letting them have at it. It's a polished, almost terrifyingly vast title that gets its hooks in you the moment you click on that first country, and simply refuses to let go. Now, if you don't mind, I've got some peasants to oppress.

  • Europa Universalis IV is every bit as epic as its predecessors, and the changes that it has made are overwhelmingly positive. For instance, the diplomatic, administrative, and military power aspect is more fun than the older system of bureaucrats and sliders restricting your actions. Also, the automation of mechanics like rebel repression and colonization wipes away the most tedious aspects of the series.

  • Part of Paradox’s ever expanding catalogue of well-crafted RTS games, Europa Universalis IV looks great, plays smoothly, keeps the player invested and provides a terrific sandbox for exploring history in a fun interactive way. The biggest issue is the learning curve, which seems at times needlessly steep; also, they could have taken some more time with the hint system.

Europa Universalis IV is easy to recommend to anyone interested in historical strategy – it’s the best game in the series, which can now take its place, with no caveats, among the giants of the genre. Very few strategy games manage to show the grand sweep of history as something that can be directly influenced and made fun, and only EU4 manages to do it with both a level of complexity that creates historical plausibility and a learning curve gentle enough to be welcoming and satisfying.

  • Europa Universalis IV is a well-constructed simulation of what it's like to bring through the colonial era. For history buffs and strategy grognards, EU4 delivers an excellent update to a storied franchise, but it may be hard for new players to penetrate its esoteric systems. If you loved EU3 or Crusader Kings 2, you'll likely enjoy EU4 even if you argue on forums about rules changes. If you are a strategy newbie or used to winning all the time, I'd recommend a more straightforward game.

  • The result of these efforts is a textured and engrossing simulation that conquers the common ground between your average Civilization V player and the long-time devotees of grand strategy. Never before have I felt that "World at your fingertips" feeling as strongly, and you owe it to your sense of discovery to give EU IV an hour of your life or two (hundred). Order in tonight. You have a world to dominate.

  • It's deep and complex, but not unintuitive, and the range of options open to the player means variety and longevity. Overall it might lack some of the personality of Crusader Kings II, but there's so much here that strategy fans will have plenty to get their teeth stuck into, and I'd recommend it to both EU veterans and newcomers alike.

  • EU3 fans are obviously going to feel right at home here, and whilst we’d encourage newcomers to try it out, since there’s no ‘face’ to game (As it’s about nations, not people), it might not seem as inviting. Once you’ve played one Paradox game though, you’ve played them all, so if you want to start with CKII first, don’t hesitate to play this one as well. You won’t regret it.

    About the game

The game is mainly set in the historical era of the initial European exploration and colonization of the New World. The game map covers the entire Earth (minus the polar regions), and players are free to explore and expand into most of it except for certain lands such as deserts and tundra that are considered uninhabitable or unexplored historically during the in-game years. Players can choose to play single-player mode versus the AI, or multiplayer over a LAN or the Internet against a mix of human and AI opponents. The player may also switch to controlling a different country within the same game world.
