  • Escape Plan’s memorable puzzles are wrapped up in a unique presentation, but once you finish the 3 hour campaign there's not much of a reason to comeback. Sure there a few collectibles scattered throughout the stages, a challenge mode, and you can always try to improve your score to net a 3-star rating, but there's no tangible reward for doing so.

There are costumes to unlock and a great wealth of content in the DLC for those who feel the main campaign wasn’t enough to sate their puzzle hunger, but all in all, it’s a good value for the amount of content offered. While it didn’t blow my mind or redefine just exactly what puzzle games meant to me, it was solid, albeit unspectacular puzzle experience that I’m sure the fans of the genre will enjoy.

  • Escape Plan isn’t the most successful puzzle or platform game, but the PlayStation 4 version is an improved port of its handheld counterpart. ...The charming chiaroscuro graphics look superb on the big screen, but I just wish the game didn’t push me so hard to beat each room so fast. Overall, there’s a fair amount to admire about Escape Plan, but running the gauntlet at breakneck pacing doesn’t do it justice.

  • Escape Plan has broken free of the shackles of the Vita and tunnelled onto the PS4 with a surprising degree of success. The touch controls are mostly gone, but the button prompts that replace them result in a more precise and less frustrating experience. If you haven’t played the title before, then this pleasant port offers the perfect opportunity to experience the wonderfully surreal first-party exclusive on a big screen.

  • Escape Plan is the epitome of looks not being everything. I do not think I have ever reviewed a video game that presented such an interesting dichotomy. As neat as some of the ideas and puzzle based elements may be, I hoped for way more for my money’s worth in the gameplay department. If I were judging Escape Plan on presentation alone it would likely receive top marks but the frustrating controls, and trial and error based gameplay really drag things down.

  • The core ideas driving Escape Plan are solid, and they can make for an enjoyable time, particularly if you tackle only a few stages at a time and then take a break. The interesting level design and artistic production values grapple with an awkward control scheme that often interferes with the fun. The resulting game is still worthwhile, but it falls short of what it so easily might have been.

  • Escape Plan'€™s format — short stages, cute design, and a three star system€“ — purposefully draws comparisons to the iPhone competition. It is, without question, more beautiful than Angry Birds and Cut the Rope and their knockoffs. But it fails to compare when it comes to the actual playing of the game. The touch controls are too unreliable, the camera too cumbersome.

Appropriately priced on the PSN at $15, Escape Plan is a worthy purchase, especially if you're looking for a pick-up-and-play game that can be digested very slowly, one morsel at a time. I just hope Fun Bits Interactive gets a crack at a sequel, because Escape Plan can easily be better than just great.

  • It's rough around the edges, then, and it rings a little false, but Escape Plan is still a decent means of getting to know your Vita a bit better. Like the hardware it lives on, this is the PlayStation brand getting to grips with the era of iOS and Android - and the results, while rather conflicted in this case, are interesting.

    About the game

Escape Plan™ takes advantage of the PlayStation®Vita system's multi-touch display, rear touch panel, swipe interfaces and motion sensor, putting the fate of the hapless heroes in the palm of your hand. Players can swipe, squeeze, poke and slap Lil and Laarg to manipulate the characters and interact with the diverse environments. Only you can help them survive each deadly room before their captor and nemesis, Bakuki, recycles them and turns them into his minions... or sheep.
