  • I liked the way the game flows; the console roots show, and that is a good thing. While I think the controls can be tweaked a little to account for shifts in gameplay, I like that the sensitivity of said controls can be tweaked for sensitivity. Big ups for the upfront payment model. It’s the perfect time waster, and is easy to get into. What more can we ask for while we test our reflexes?

  • It's more difficult to explain in words than it is to play. Everything about this game is beautiful, from the smooth touch controls to the aquatic zen-like sound effects. It's addictive as can be, and the difficulty is just right to keep you coming back for more. There are several game modes, each of which is unlocked by a high enough score in the mode prior.

  • As it is, this game is interesting enough of a challenge for just enough time that 99 cents for the curious player will not feel like a waste. This game does do a great job at making the innately-difficult concept of controlling two characters at once feel accommodating.

  • Finishing Entwined is a bittersweet experience. One on hand I was happy to have escaped the extremely repetitive gameplay, while on the other hand I just felt that with a little more variation, Entwined could have been so much more.

  • So, if you really love this type of game, you may enjoy Entwined. But I ended up hating the mechanics, and that ruined the experience for me. ...It feels more like a game demo meant to showcase the PS4 and Sony’s support of indie developers. There are good aspects to Entwined, but being a frustrating, arcadey, tunnel game completely overshadowed any kind of art and emotion I was meant to feel, and that was the biggest let down of all.

  • Bare-bones as its gameplay is, Entwined still manages to be moderately fun for the few hours it lasts, and nailing the more complex, complementary bird-fish maneuvers can feel awfully rewarding. ...Entwined's abstract worlds are wonderfully pretty, its music ranges from softly hypnotic to downright stirring, and its premise is intriguingly strange. ...Entwined clearly wants to be something meaningful, but sadly falls short of anything more than eye candy.

  • It's a relatively bare construction overall, consisting of a nine-level story mode that takes about an hour or two to complete and a five-level challenge mode that's all about staying alive as long as you can. ...Entwined has clear objectives and an overall goal, but the reward for "beating" it isn't points or a trophy, it's a sense of serenity and peace. It's certainly not for everyone, but to those who find the idea appealing, it utterly succeeds.

  • The whole production is imbued with stunning environments replete with this trenchant sense of beauty. It's just really a pity the gameplay is rarely as cogent as these ornate landscapes or the gauzy, resonant soundtrack. There's obviously something special at work here bubbling beneath the surface, but it's too subtle and poorly realized to merit delving into. Entwined is just far more satisfying to look at or listen to than it is to actually play.

I started Entwined at the start of my work day, and -- after several pauses to write e-mails and attend to some other matters -- I was done by lunch. In that brief time, I came to appreciate its gorgeous aesthetics and moody soundtrack, but at the same time, I was never able to develop a rhythm playing the game itself. There's a wonderful nugget at its core, but the final product, when all features and factors combine, never shines enough to recommend it without a series of caveats.

That’s Entwined in a nutshell: a nice core bit of gameplay tarted up with unnecessary pretensions and stretched too thin, even over its short playtime. It feels like a minigame from a bigger title – specifically, those minigames from God of War and Dead Space 2 in which you guide a plummeting hero through falling debris. What it doesn’t feel like is a full a game – let alone the artsy indie hero Sony would like it to be.
