- As is, En Garde! doesn’t overstay its welcome, and its strong combat will carry players through its rather short playtime. While the rest of the game isn’t as compelling, and the characters and story, while fine, feel like a missed opportunity, I still enjoyed my time with it. A more fleshed-out sequel, however, could be something truly special.
Andrew Thornton · Aug 29, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - En Garde! offers a tight core idea and executes on it well, although in some predictable ways. It’s fun to constantly scan the battlefield and evaluate incoming enemies to decide how to use the environment and Adalia’s superior fencing skills to separate groups, stun some enemies, and, finally, take all of them down.
Cosmin Vasile · Aug 22, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - En Garde! is a playable cartoon, with a charming heroine, hilarious gags, and colorful visuals. The combat and platforming are simple yet fun, with the former being quick yet deadly. While it is very short, it has enough replayability to keep you coming back for more.
David Flynn · Aug 19, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - En Garde! is a delightful action title boasting strong enemy and combat design, a likable cast, and a stellar soundtrack. Still, the adventure felt a little too brief, resulting in the gameplay mechanics not feeling like they had reached their greatest potential. While you do unlock an Arena mode that offers additional opportunities to experience the combat system thanks to modifiers, it’s not as substantial as I would have hoped. Regardless, casual and diehard action lovers will undoubtedly have a memorable time with En Garde!, as I believe it elegantly manages to be worthwhile for both general audiences.
Orpheus Joshua · Aug 18, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The game’s unrelenting silliness undoubtedly sets the right mood, but the delivery is a touch leaden. A first chapter that has you chasing the masked ‘El Vigilante’, whose secret identity is no secret at all, sets the scene by dragging the joke out too long, and trusting far too much in the comedic potential of exaggerated Spanish accents – not least making a three-course meal of the word ‘Vigilante’. More generally, the quips that rattle back and forth between Adalia and her foes do land sporadically—“Call the guards!” “Aren’t we the guards?”—but more often than not, eyes will roll.
Jon Bailes · Aug 17, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - En Garde! is a really fun action game full of heart that rewards skillful play, and mastery of its mechanics. Adalia is a charming protagonist, and her unmatched wit cripples her opponents as she kicks, parries, and dodges her way through a series of hilarious episodes. The beautiful presentation, varied levels, and excellent pacing add up to a solid adventure worth taking. The boss fights are a bit disappointing due to the reliance on mobs, but En Garde! does way more right than wrong.
Ali Hashmi · Aug 16, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It's worth sticking with it through such moments, though. Painted in Bougainvillea pinks and honeyed golds, with horizons dithering into impressionist brush strokes, this is one of the prettiest and most colourful action games I've encountered in an age, and its cheery spirit never seems to dip. The odd boss fight aside I've loved my time dashing through this world, seeing its sights and finishing off its foes with elegance and poise - or at least enjoying the pratfalls when it all goes wrong. Well played, En Garde! Well played.
Christian Donlan · Sep 18, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The combat is a lot of fun to play around with, the visuals are delightful, and there are some fun little puzzles to solve as well, albeit not very complex ones. En Garde! is a lot of fun, and while it might not be long enough to satisfy everyone, the addition of the arcade horde mode adds in a lot of extra gameplay for those looking to turn fighting into an art form.
Jason Coles · Aug 16, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - En Garde is a tantalizing first outing from new studio Fireplace Games, thanks to its slick combat and wonderful sense of humor. It’s in some ways so strong that it leaves you wondering what this team could do with more time and money behind them.
Mitchell Demorest · Aug 16, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - I applaud the insistent focus on combat, but En Garde! deserves more; a plot, environments waiting to be explored, real progression. None of that is here, so while the game's core is well-designed and robust, it's a bit too slim an experience to get a wholehearted recommendation from me.
