  • Elex II is a disappointing game that fails to build on the potential of the original. While at some moments it manages to capture some of the same strengths, it feels like a poorly implemented retread in several ways. Slight improvements to combat don't make up for a less interesting story, worse characters, weak quest design, and a stark lack of polish.

  • Despite the richness of its world, engaging story, and implementation of old-school RPG mechanics, Elex 2 works against itself at almost every turn. Because of its utter lack of polish. There have been some patches since the game's release addressing some of its bugs, but in my time with it, I experienced enough of them to not want to return. Random auto-save sticking was just one of the soul-destroying glitches I encountered.

  • The world of ELEX II looks cool, the sound is alright, and the combat is mostly simple but effective. Everything else is disappointing though. The writing is bad and the overall progress system has really not been properly designed. You can die anywhere at all times without good reason, and that just sucks. You need to run a lot and deal with bad voice acting, and it’s not fun. Like ELEX, this might be just one for the real fans.

Honestly, my companions were getting dropped more than they were hitting enemies in almost every instance. It was about this time that I really began to wonder what people were talking about when they praised the original game so much. Maybe it is that much better than this one, but Elex 2 is pretty bad. Worse than that I personally didn’t find it fun, no disrespect to those that love it. As I said at the outset, I don’t mind ‘janky’ games, but Elex 2 was just ‘bridge too far’ for me.

  • Elex II is a baffling game. The combat is clunky and can be very difficult, and the game has more than a few bugs, with other issues like a glacial pace. However, the game is genuinely interesting to explore and fun, for all its problems - and there are many. The story and its turns are engaging, and it's impossible not to see the care and enthusiasm from Piranha Bytes. Elex II is Eurojank, and I can't help but enjoy it because of (or despite, take your pick) that.

  • Elex 2 has come a long way from the first game back in 2017. Graphically it looks much better and the storyline feels much more robust. The story mode difficulty has made the game much more accessible for those just wanting to play and enjoy the story. The combat hasn’t pushed on too much but it’s not terrible, but it does feel a bit dated. But if you are a big RPG fan then there is plenty of content to sink your teeth into.

  • Elex II continues the story of the former Alb, Jax. He must wage war against an extra-terrestrial threat. But the fragile alliances he'll form may end everyone before the threat does.

  • This is hardly a revolutionary idea in 2022, but in ELEX II it feels so raw and exploitable - not controlled and polished to the point you’ll only ever see and do what the developers dictate. While ELEX II’s core gameplay could be dismissed as traditional or dated, the way all the elements of the world interact with you and one another is what creates the magic.

Elex 2 seems geared toward a certain type of player who thinks 2006’s Gothic 3 represents the golden age of the RPG genre, and not much that has come along since is worth drawing inspiration from. Because in most cases, this 40-plus-hour odyssey has not done that. Jetting around a visually impressive world in a neat, upgradeable jetpack was the most fun I had with it. I never looked forward to the slow and clunky combat or interacting with its too often bizarre or nonsensical script. I like a big, sprawling, crunchy RPG more than most, so I wish I could enjoy these more than I do. But unless they take some notes on where the genre has been headed in the last decade, I might give Elex 3 a pass.

  • It’s endearing how hard Piranha Bytes tries with Elex II, but its head and heart are much too big for its body. It takes too long for the combat to become bearable, and the story, while ambitious, doesn’t quite reach the heavens it aims for. If you’re already enamored with Magalan, Elex II offers enough to re-immerse you in that world to make a second visit worthwhile. But everyone else should probably stay home.
