  • Fallen Enchantress still has issues: a single big army of archers seems to beat every balanced or distributed approach, and the AI still isn't very aggressive in war. But I was never dreaming of a perfectly balanced strategy game, just one with lots of interesting possibilities, and one that actually works. Fallen Enchantress finally manages that.

  • I like a game that tries to combine several different gameplay styles, but the overall experience seems rushed and unpolished. It offers plenty of content and skills, yet doesn’t seem to excel at any particular one. Elemental: Fallen Enchantress does a lot of things right but never truly delivers on any of them. Hopefully in time there will be updates that improve certain areas of the gameplay, which could turn this game into a diamond in the rough.

  • Fallen Enchantress nicely wipes lingering memories of its predecessor from your mind. This is a much better game, a fresher and much-improved take on the same concepts of forging a kingdom and fighting epic battles like a warrior mage without design problems and bugs weighing everything down. With that said, Fallen Enchantress isn't quite as accessible as it could be due to the initial learning curve and the dense nature of the fantasy world that you've been plopped into.

Fallen Enchantress isn’t without its problems, but it marks a fun and significant improvement over 2010’s Elemental: War of Magic and proves that there may be hope for its rare blend of roleplaying and 4x strategy after all. Its individual elements suffer from a “jack of all trades” mediocrity, but they combine to form a whole that hints at greatness without ever quite achieving it.

  • Elemental: Fallen Enchantress engenders a feeling of real accomplishment, without requiring the investment in time and study demanded by truly hardcore strategy titles. The "sovereign" mechanic is a nice twist and while it's not particularly deep, personally cracking skulls or questing for a pair of dragon's eyes while simultaneously ordering the construction of a granary in New Foozleville is pretty damn cool, and there are enough customization and gameplay options to keep things fresh for a good while.

  • I like Fallen Enchantress. It’s the closest anyone has come to producing the game I’ve been dreaming about since I was an adolescent with visions of wizards carving fantastical empires out of a hostile world. But as much as I feel like I should be head-over-heels in love with it, my 50-plus hours with the game leave me satisfied rather than ecstatic.
