  • When Earthfall decides to toe the line of it’s genre and play it safe, it does so in a satisfactory way and shows us the enduring nature of the pillars of the basic online co-operative shooter structure that continue to stand the test of time. It’s just a shame that Earthfall almost never does anything more than that, and, at times, even dips below its own standards.

  • There might have been plenty of co-op shooters since Left 4 Dead, but few managed to wrangle the same fun, fear and frantic combat as Earthfall did.

One nice thing Holospark announced is that all extra content they will be providing post launch will be completely free, so any new missions or chapters can be enjoyed without having to spend any extra. That could entice some players to pick it up, play through it, and come back to it when new things arrive. In the end, with some buddies and a game plan, Earthfall can be a fun, albeit, flawed experience that a Left 4 Dead fan would still enjoy.

  • Earthfall follows a proven concept, but its delivery feels outdated, derivative, and woefully underdeveloped. The thought of a new game in the style of Left 4 Dead sounds great, but you would hope that whatever comes out surpasses its inspirations or at least matches it. Earthfall simply doesn't have the content or concepts to make a case for itself in a world where the two Left 4 Dead games are still viable options, and far better ones at that.

  • Earthfall somewhat succeeds at it’s core mission, if it’s mission is to try to kickstart the multiplayer subgenre that Turtle Rock started a decade ago. It’s biggest failure is convincing people that it is a better alternative to Left 4 Dead 2, which is still very available on limited platforms. There’s also Call of Duty’s Zombies/Invasion side modes, which are ubiquitous.

  • While calling Earthfall derivative of Left 4 Dead might even be an understatement, it's an entertaining variation on that theme with a great extra layer of map control added by the barricade system. I wish it had pushed harder to differentiate itself, especially in the design of special enemies. But if you’re looking to satisfy your co-op horde shooter craving with Left 4 Dead 3 still nowhere on the immediate horizon, you could certainly do a lot worse.

  • There’s still a lot of potential to be realised in a Left 4 Dead-like experience, but Earthfall is a complete miss. It fails to build upon the foundations abandoned by Valve, with repetitive AI spawns and an arsenal of weaponry that does nothing to distinguish themselves from one another. And with just four hours of content to work through, you’ll be left feeling short-changed by an experience that gives you no reason to return once the credits roll.

  • If you stay at the same objective, aliens will keep spawning, so you can make your own little endless wave mode. Bottom line, there’s a decent foundation here that just isn’t well executed, and that’s disappointing. As it stands right now, Earthfall isn’t exactly worth it’s $29.99 USD price tag, though if Holospark tightens up the areas that bring the whole game down, it might be worth revisiting later on.

  • If the absence of Left 4 Dead 3 has you itching for something alike, Earthfall will just about do the trick. It’s a shame that the game doesn’t do much to innovate, and repetition will indeed sink in once you’ve plugged in a few hours, but with that said, the core structure and its gameplay loop is compelling enough to justify a recommendation. Basic it may well be, but it’s fairly action-packed and exciting nevertheless.

  • Even a couple of interesting quirks can't stop Earthfall from falling flat.
