- Time really does fly. If you had asked me when Earth Defence Force 5 was released, I would have told you “a few years ago”.
Matt · Oct 12, 2026 Reviewed on Switch 2Read full review - The deeper combat thanks to some new enemy types only comes after spending the first two levels doing nothing, and the game is now more stable, but PC fans who've waited this long still have to buy the extra missions via DLC. Nevertheless, this is a treat of a game that actions fans will love.
Cody Medellin · Aug 23, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Earth Defense Force 5 has some entertaining bits. The voices and sound effects, and the smooth way that you can just carve your path through waves of monsters as you collect and shoot your weapons of choice. It has a bit of a downside as well, mainly that there’s no depth in any way. Especially for a PC release that’s a lot later but still at a high price (50 euros/dollars), it could have had more. But what it wants to do, being funny in its own way and giving you something fun to do, it does well.
Pimp Without The Pee · Aug 01, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Earth Defense Force 5 is very familiar, but it's the best game in the series and a huge amount of fun. Fans of action games will find a whole lot to enjoy with this one.
Andrew Farrell · Jul 11, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Earth Defense Force 5 stands in the face of pretty much every game released these days. It’s the game that doesn’t bother trying to keep up with the Jones’ because it’s happy doing its own thing and being just what it wants to be. And that’s brilliant. And you know what else is brilliant? Shooting hundreds of enemies while listening to humorous quips. That never gets old. Never.
Richard Seagrave · Dec 13, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Earth Defense Force 5 is a fun title that doesn’t aim for anything more than that. It sets out to give you many monsters to shoot and many weapons with which to shoot them. In that estimation, it succeeds. If the idea of doing this over and over again with the only real progression coming from new weapons gained at the end of each mission, then this is the game for you.
Corey Gavaza · Dec 13, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I like this game a lot, but solo play will wear on some for sure. There is luckily co-op play, both online and split screen and with friends. With such a small barrier to entry (point and shoot) it should be easy to find others to play with even if they aren’t super familiar with video games. The only odd control option is the touch pad and the d-pad activating pre-made quick chat lines.
Anthony Mann · Dec 12, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I feel almost dirty recommending Earth Defense Force 5. Even though it tends to run more like a PowerPoint presentation than a full priced video game at some points, it’s such a fun guilty pleasure, packed with dozens of hours of content, that I can’t help but give it a pass.
Zack Stout · Dec 11, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - My two kids, both under the age of 10, had an absolute blast playing co-op together – for them, the visuals and audio didn’t matter, but the “cool” massive spiders and ants did. Earth Defense Force 5, like previous Earth Defense Force games, clearly have a following – and if you’ve enjoyed the games before, you’ll enjoy this one just as much. If you’re new to the franchise, you’re not going to get much depth, but under the right circumstances and with the right mindset, you might be able to squeeze out a fun time.
Alex Everatt · Dec 09, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - This iteration of PlayStation 4 features a great number of positive enhancements, and while the negatives are more pronounced (being unable to start on Inferno difficulty) this time around, the purity of slaughtering everything in sight with progressively bigger and more badass weaponry shines through. Don’t just consider getting a copy for yourself; get three for your friends and tackle Earth Defense Force 5’s online campaign together. After all, the EDF doesn’t leave a man behind.
