  • If Dungeons 2 was just a competent dungeon builder held back by a few technical bugs and some bad interface design, it might be something worth checking out. As a dungeon builder horrifically Frankensteined to one of the lamest RTS experiences I've played in years, its an unfortunate monstrosity that should be safely avoided.

  • All in all, Dungeons 2 is an enjoyable venture. The dungeon aspect of the game is great and really sent me down memory lane even if the controls annoyed me a bit. The Overworld RTS style play could be polished up a bit to make it more engaging. The background music is done well, fighting comes along with some pretty nice visuals, and of course you can’t forget the amusing and slightly snarky narration of Kevan Brighting – even if he got a little irritating at times.

  • The RTS layout is simple but this can make it more accessible to players who are not masters of that genre. It some ways this game is reminiscent of the Warcraft franchise before it became an MMORPG. Even with its flaws, it’s fun once you get acclimated to it. Despite not excelling at any single thing, the combined dungeon keeper with RTS approach does result in an interesting game that can be enjoyable once some time has been spent with it.

  • All of this might be much more fun when you take advantage of the LAN and online multiplayer content, which gives up to four players their own dungeons and lets them fight over a shared overworld. ...Its directions are sometimes muddled, and the whole affair feels like it was oversimplified to cut down on micromanagement, but the beauty of Dungeons 2 is that it never fails to let us take some glee in sowing discord. It's not quite a keeper, but it's an improvement over the original.

It’s a shame Dungeons 2’s above-ground RTS battles are so primitive and poor, because the underground dungeon-management stuff actually works fairly well. It’s nothing new or special — another would-be Dungeon Keeper successor — but that’s not the worst idea in the world. Dungeons 2 could have been a nice, if uninspired, Dungeon Keeper clone, but it reaches to do more than that, trips, and falls flat on its face.

  • Being evil—and perhaps more importantly, managing evil—is fun, though. And the more opportunities to be evil I had, the more fun everything was. Growing a simulated economy and building a base full of angry orcs and spitting naga, then unleashing them on innocent unicorns and happy bunnies? That’s a damn good time.

  • It’s dull at times, but that’s sort of the nature of a sim-progression experience. ...Dungeons 2 does an admirable job of channeling that old-school Dungeon Keeper feel into a new title, and fans of the series will find some enjoyable evil to be had in the dungeon-sim genre. Swapping between dungeon and overworld can make the game feel schizophrenic at times, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not a significant detractor.

  • Those who felt turned off by the critically maligned Dungeons would do well to give Dungeons 2 a look. It evolves the dungeon management subgenre in a number of clever ways, and the hands-on strategy elements make for a fantastic compliment. It’s a shame that there’s such a reliance on cooldowns and it’s an uphill struggle to keep resources growing, because RealmForge put together some real quality work here, and Dungeon Keeper fans have something well worth sinking their teeth into.

  • Dungeons 2 certainly looks attractive enough. The characters are chunky and colourful and the environments have a decent amount of detail, while little touches to dungeon rooms like the treasury and training arena add atmosphere and charm. There’s a lot to be said for a game that makes you laugh while asking you to slaughter unicorns, but the poor RTS element means Dungeons 2 only really works 50% of the time.

  • Starting from an underground base to working your way up to creating an army of snaga, orcs, and goblins and letting them loose on a group of helpless unicorns and rabbits has never been more satisfying. If you are looking for a unique combination of Starcraft and Dungeon Keeper then this may be the game you’ve been looking for.
