  • Dull Grey brings an oppressive vision of the future to our screens, with an initially simple-seeming choice system having some hidden depth the more we read into things. It won’t last more than an evening, but the tale and atmosphere make this worth checking out at least once.

  • There are also technical issues, at least with the Vita port I played. There are multiple endings (you can comply with the system and lead Kir into a life of misery, or make him happy by giving him some choice, or become a system-destroying rebel), but in chasing these the game glitched on me and stopped displaying text. I was even given some placeholder images that said things like “this is all the screen displays after rebooting”, which required me to restart from the beginning rather than reloading my save to fix the problem. And that really was a fitting way to conclude my experience with Dull Grey – on a note of frustration, convinced that my time would be better spent elsewhere.

  • It needs to hold its own as a short story, both warranting the price and justifying it over other celebrated short stories. While Dull Grey is effective in parts, it can’t clear the huge bar it places in front of itself. The writing lacks coherence, scattered with the odd mistranslation, and characters fail to break through the grey mire that surrounds them.

About the game

Dull Grey is an award-winning visual novel about growing up. It tells about mother and son, free will, and the search for happiness among foggy mountains and grey pipes. You will be making one and the same choice again and again deciding who the son should become - a lamplighter or a tallyman. At first it may seem that the situation leaves you no choice at all. But don’t jump to conclusions, take a moment to think it over and then, perhaps, you’ll see your story in full color.
