  • Dry Drowning is a dark, interactive murder mystery novel with a compelling story that is represented well on the Nintendo Switch. The otherwise gripping story is marred slightly by some poor user interface design choices but otherwise delivers everything you'd look for in a top-notch visual novel!

  • I have to say that despite some issues, I was pleasantly surprised by Dry Drowning. The setting was interesting, the choices mattered, and the story was compelling enough to make me want to see it through to the end. While not all of the socio-political story elements were original, there were still plenty of mysteries and twists that kept me captivated.

  • Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Dry Drowning. It’s got a lot going for it – excellent writing, a deep, riveting story, and plenty of replayability with branching paths and multiple endings. The few flaws the game does have are more a minor nuisance than any kind of real hindrance.

  • While Dry Drowning’s conclusion may be overly complicated, the visual novel-styled journey of tracking down a serial killer in a future dystopian city more than makes up for it.

  • Dry Drowning is an intriguing, engaging, if flawed visual novel. While it's more expansive than traditional visual novels, it still lives and dies on the story, character and writing, which are strong and interesting, though let down by a rough localisation. However, even with this, it's well worth checking out, looking and sounding both fantastic, with an outstanding soundtrack that really adds to the game.

  • Dry Drowning usually doesn’t take the form you’d expect, but it still makes it all work. Detective yarns don’t usually have surreal asides (apart from Twin Peaks). Visual novels are usually a lot chummier than the gritty murders here. And even though it’s throwing a pack of quite disparate elements into one weird cocktail, the result doesn’t taste half bad.

  • Dry Drowning is surreal and silly; it draws you in with earnest and ludicrous writing, perhaps not in the way the game's developer intended.

  • In spite of its spotty localization, Dry Drowning is a compelling blend of visual novel and adventure game, providing a gritty cyberpunk world to explore, a brutal case to uncover, and Orwellian politics to navigate.

  • I wanted to like Dry Drowning, with its promise of a dark and absorbing plot. Its gameplay, like most visual novels, was simple and easy to pick up, but then it made little mistakes like adding puzzles that felt completely unnecessary. Crucially, its Living Nightmares system, offering only three lives to get through interrogations for which the game often didn’t prepare me, just ruined my enjoyment of the story. On one occasion, Foley had actually seen something himself but I wasn’t shown, though he was then meant to use his knowledge to progress. That kind of thing just isn’t acceptable.

  • As far as presentation goes, Dry Drowning does put its best foot forward. The excellent sound direction pairs well with the muted, almost gritty art style. Unfortunately, for as aesthetically and stylistically pleasant as the visual novel is, its script leaves quite a bit to be desired. It isn't so much that the story is bad - there's a very intriguing layer of horror that permeates over the narrative - but that dialogue is especially weak.
