  • Drakengard 3 has an interesting premise, very good length, and mostly enjoyable combat. Unfortunately, it’s so poorly executed that I just couldn’t enjoy the game or fully understand the story it was trying to tell without having to look it up online. If you are a fan of Drakengard, and really want to play Drakengard 3 anyway, you may want to wait for a price drop to pick this up; if you pay fifty dollars (USD) for it, you’ll probably feel ripped off.

While the repetitive combat and atrocious performance issues make Drakengard 3 very difficult to recommend, its characters and story, along with a fantastic OST, makes me feel that there may very well be an audience for this wonderful mess of a game, myself included.

  • A hot mess of gibberish that still manages to be vastly amusing, Drakengard 3 is as close to Deadly Premonition as a hack n' slash game gets. It's bizarre and it's disheveled to the point of downright idiocy, but it knows what it is and it goes the whole hog. I laughed, anyway.

  • I love how the only voice of human sanity is a nonhuman. I love how I can step away and think about how the concepts introduced in the alternate ending paths symbolize abstract concepts of gaming. I love Drakengard 3, warts and all. In fact, I think the warts might be part of what makes the game so appealing. It's a heavily flawed game, set in an ugly world and filled with despicable people. And yet, somehow it's beautiful.

  • Drakengard 3 is what happens when you give imaginative people no budget. The flaws, both technical and during gameplay, cause a few too many problems to overlook, but, like any family reunion, there’s definitely still a good time to be had – especially if you know when you've had enough.

  • While the ideas behind the story are interesting, and the plot revelations are cool, Drakengard 3 takes forever to get to them, and wears itself mighty thin along the way. There’s easily enough enemy and weapon variety to keep a ten hour action title fresh, but not a 40-hour RPG. Embarrassing technical issues and weak flight gameplay only compound the problem.

  • Drakengard 3's weirdness is its greatest asset. The narrative is intriguing, and the combat is fun enough, but it's the game's unapologetically unusual atmosphere that made me end up liking it. It almost lost me to the flood of colorful language and sex-crazed overtones, but those frustrating first few hours gave way to one of the most singular games I've ever experienced.

  • While I suppose the game is good for mindless fun, with a solid voice cast and some salty language, it’s ultimately just a mash-fest of murder and mayhem. This Zero lady is pissed, her sisters fight back, and lots of dead bodies clog the river of blood. Everything from the controls to the graphics are just okay. Some of its lazy touches recall a PS2 relic that was better off being pretty on older hardware.

I did everything I could to overlook Drakengard 3’s shoddy graphics, repetitive gameplay, poor controls, and shallow characters. Alas, this RPG is its own worst enemy. Everything about it feels underdeveloped and cobbled together. If there’s ever another Drakengard, I hope the developers do it justice and invest in smoother technology and a better-written script.

  • All things considered, Drakengard 3 is a serviceable game that despite its shortcomings, provides enough thrills to warrant checking out. Sure, there are graphical issues, slowdown, and the game is rather easy in areas where it should provide more challenge. However, the story is goofy enough for some laughs, the ability to switch between 4 weapons in battle is fun, and despite its repetitive nature, the combat does enough to keep you interested.
