- Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is one of those games that I think is a must-play on the PlayStation Vita. Even if you don’t like the Dragon Ball Z anime/manga this game plays and feels amazing, brand aside – this an excellent action title which stands on its own and would be fun even without the Dragon Ball “skin”.
Tyler Olthoff · Jul 12, 2014 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Prior games have been all style and no substance and unfortunately the latest is more of the same, possibly even less thanks to its bare-bones presentation. If you’re a huge fan of the iconic anime looking for even more fighting action -- and you have friends who are willing to fork out the cash to join you online -- there is some enjoyment to be had. For everyone else, aside from the increased multiplayer, you've already played this before.
Wesley Ruscher · Mar 19, 2014 Reviewed on X360Read full review - There are some other complaints to be levied here--such as every transformation being a separate character variant rather than a state you can enter mid-battle. But what ultimately sinks Battle of Z isn't the little fan nitpicks, it's just ill-conceived design as a whole. It's certainly not the worst DBZ game ever released, but if there's ever been a statement that's damning with faint praise, that would be it.
Heidi Kemps · Mar 12, 2014 Reviewed onRead full review - Will this appeal to the casual fan? I think more so than previous titles in the past. The playing curve is lower, the mastering curve is a bit lower, but the fully-voiced characters and straight-forward “hit everything is sight” will do the trick. Thankfully, Battle of Z doesn’t just Yamcha the whole game up.
Kevin Schaller · Feb 12, 2014 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Ultimately, Battle of Z offers Dragon Ball Z fans more of the same: another chance at seeing their favorite characters pummel each other. However, without a real fighting engine to support the game, hardcore fans haven't just played this before, they've probably already played something better.
Robert Workman · Feb 10, 2014 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - It’s a simple game, with simple mechanics, but I still had a fun time with it. I highly suggest playing it online over playing it single player due to the dull AI, but even single player has it’s moments of fun. Battle of Z may not be revolutionary, but it does offer something a little different and rather fun for the DBZ fans out there.
Drew Leachman · Feb 05, 2014 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is going to be divisive. Hardcore DBZ fans are going to love it regardless while casual fans and gamers are going to give it a big pass. Personally, while I did have some fun, the lack of offline play, the long wait times for online play, the dated graphics and repetitive game play have put me squarely in the latter. If you just want to have a good old fashioned Super Sayian throw down, pick this one up. If that sentence doesn’t immediately excite you or you don’t know what that means, I’d recommend you pick up something else.
Doug Mercer · Feb 05, 2014 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Battle of Z’s faithful models, beautiful settings, and chaotic action are an excellent fit for those seeking another tribute to the legendary anime and manga series. Fighting on both sides of every major encounter from the show is a treat, and overcoming the challenge of downing particularly difficult enemies is extremely satisfying, especially with a couple friends at your back.
Jake Magee · Feb 05, 2014 Reviewed on PS3, X360, VitaRead full review - Dragon Ball Z is at its best when it’s a one-on-one showdown, good vs. evil, rival vs. rival. It shows that intensity of squaring off against a long-time adversary, not some crowd of spiky haired goofballs sniping at each other with energy blasts from the air. Not even the inclusion of Super Saiyan God Form Goku from the newest DBZ movie makes any difference. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z could’ve been a decent DBZ game, but that shoehorned team mechanic instead makes it one of the worst. Avoid this game like you would a Galick Gun to the face.
Alex Carlson · Feb 05, 2014 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Repetitive missions and a lifeless fighting engine are sure to disappoint both newcomers and fans expecting to relive some of the action the series is known for.
