- If you enjoyed last year's Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, you won't go wrong by picking up this collection. These graphics are likewise bursting with life, and the classic Dragon Quest monster designs are as charming as ever – which makes the sting of character designer Akira Toriyama’s passing that much harsher. But it's good to know his Dragon Quest legacy is in fine form.

A remake was a risky move, considering both the old-school nature of the game and the fact that it has technically been remade three times already (Super NES, Game Boy Color, and the Mobile/Switch versions). I am so glad that Square Enix decided to take the leap and build this game into their incredible HD 2D engine. I’m even more excited that we’re getting DQ1 and 2 in this style next year (although I’m very curious how they’ll pull off the solo nature of DQ1). Whether this is your first or fourth time going through this absolute classic, you’ll completely adore this version. I hope it helps a whole new generation of RPG gamers experience a true pioneer.

Un momento ideal gracias a su gran apartado visual, una BSO de escándalo y las mejoras justas y necesarios que hacen de este remake uno de los mejores trabajos del año.

The new visuals and sound design are beautiful and elegant, with new systems updating just enough to keep it palatable to modern audiences while still keeping systems that make this game unique. Though some elements don’t hold up to scrutiny, including some parts of the voice acting and writing, and enemy behaviour, they aren’t enough to detract from how enjoyable this game is, now made more accessible than ever. With similar remakes of the first two Dragon Quests on the way, fans and new players are going to have a good time. The quality of Dragon Quest HD-2D Remakes hopefully inspires a higher quality of classic remakes to come.

The first Final Fantasy had only been released shortly before this game, yet in terms of storytelling, worldbuilding, and themes, Dragon Quest III was much more sophisticated than Square’s inaugural title. The HD-2D engine is just the cherry on top. Thanks to that, this is one of the best retro remakes I’ve ever played.
Matt · Nov 14, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Nonetheless, while I didn’t love my time with Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, I appreciate the simplicity of its gameplay, with it undoubtedly offering fun in accessible bursts. Unlike richer, more immersive RPGs, there aren't any complex mechanics to get to grips with – you just get stuck in, the controls intuitive regardless of knowledge. This title won’t win awards, nor will it spark debates over the genre’s unique innovations, but it’ll offer some a means to while away the hours, lost in a sea of colourful monsters, which is sometimes all we ever really need.

Story:
Years ago, the great hero Ortega bid farewell to his wife and child as he set off on a quest to defeat the villainous Archfiend, Baramos.
