  • Dragon Quest 2: Luminaries of the Legendary Line is the second game in this classic JRPG series where we play as the descendants of a fabled hero and must save our land from the forces of evil once more.

  • The Dragon Quest 1-3 Collection is a solid, if bare-bones, port of the JRPGs that started it all. The games are nostalgic trips down memory lane mixed with some frustrating relics of video games of yore. If you've ever wanted to experience where it all began, this is the best way to do it. Since this collection was released at the same time as Dragon Quest XI S, it's tough to recommend it over the new hotness. Sometimes, though, you just want to sit down and slip into a comfortable classic, and Dragon Quest is made for that.

  • At the end of the day, the Eldrick trilogy will likely feel too dated for gamers looking to take the first step into the world of Dragon Quest, but the games are definitely worth playing for established franchise fans who haven't already worked through them or are looking for a bit of nostalgia. The mechanics and storytelling techniques are just a bit too old school to win over new fans, but seeing the roots of the now-iconic franchise is a great experience for fans.

  • Overall, Dragon Quest II is a port of a port that’s just ‘fair’. It’s an old-school RPG with some enhanced graphics to give it a slightly fresher feel, but the framerate is choppy and jarring. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this re-released, though if you’re a fan outside of Japan – particularly in Europe or Australia – this version of a classic RPG might still be a treat for you.

  • Dragon Quest I, II and III on the Switch are great picks, especially if you enjoyed the recent eleventh entry and wanted to experience the origins of this great series. However, these are ports of the mobile versions with some audio and visual enhancements. So if you have them on your mobile phone already, there is little point in picking them up on the Switch again, unless you really want to play them on your TV in full glory.

  • Dragon Quest and its next two sequels, Dragon Quest II and III, are historic JRPGs, with a special place in the hearts of many of we NES veterans. A re-release of these three classics coincides with a release of the newest entry in the series and capitalizes on nostalgia that the games engender. By and large, the re-release does the series justice, and gives an opportunity for a new generation to enjoy experiences from the early days of video gaming – for better or for worse.

  • Retro gamers and gaming historians should take note that Dragon Quest II is a must play for all its genre innovations. Modern retro gaming media often refer to Dragon Quest II as a black sheep of the franchise, but I disagree. It got favorable reviews upon its release, and it has innovated much. I believe that the only reason it gets a bad rap today is that it lives in the shadow of its incredible sequel.

  • As a historical relic, it’s wonderful to see this game come out on Switch, but aside from nostalgia and completionism, I can’t recommend Dragon Quest II to most people. In a world where the Switch also contains the modern marvel that is Dragon Quest XI, the stronger sequel Dragon Quest III, and the more compact and straightforward original game, this should be the lowest entry on the totem pole. Also, the story here heavily inspired Dragon Quest Builders 2, which is also a great game.

  • In the end, this is a game you can't really assign a score to. On the one hand, Dragon Quest 2 is completely solid and enjoyable by itself. The port is good in terms of presentation, but it really did need some extra attention to help ease that transition into the modern era. If you're good with retro blemishes and don't mind having to put up with some iffy features, then jump right in. If not, you'd probably want to look elsewhere for your first, or next, Dragon Quest experience.

  • Dragon Quest Heroes II is an odd mix. It has some super smart enhancements to gameplay but is bogged down by a terrible, messy storyline. There’s a lot of fun to be had, but you may be best served just not paying attention to the story. The game’s expansive gameplay options may feel overwhelming at first, but mastering its systems will reward you with a great action RPG to play.
