  • There is great fun to be had in this game if you are patient enough. The story is good, most of the time the gameplay is fun, but the constant loss of control over things can be grating.

  • Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a fine game. Exploring, designing, and building structures in the Dragon Quest world was more fun than I was expecting, but the whole fifty-hour affair is saddled by tedious combat and tiresome dialogue. Just as I'm getting in my groove making bedrooms or kitchens, along comes an NPC to notify me of an incoming enemy onslaught. Groan. Fortunately, the conclusion gives players what they want, but it's at the cost of a long "adventure."

  • Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a very fun game where you can explore, build, help other inhabitants of the islands, fight with monsters and discover the story behind the Children of Hargon. Come to aid and see the towns grow as you build houses, utilities and learn new recipes for crafting and weapons. While you don’t get carte-blanche, you do get a lot of freedom and the PC port has some cool new features up its sleeve. Hence, if you like to play in 60hz and wish to enjoy the beautiful graphics, this game is definitely a title to spend your last holiday money on.

  • The game comes with all of the DLC in a bundle pre-packaged, but that's mostly useless unless you're going to be playing the game well past the credits roll. One nice thing is that the game allows you to visit worlds that players on both PS4 and Switch have developed! I assume the same must be true the other way around, and PS4 and Switch players should be able to visit PC players' worlds since the game's launch on Steam. Not exactly a "PC" specific bonus, but still one may be worthy of a shout. Overall, this is a very solid port.

  • Dragon Quest Builders II is a game that provides the tools for one to craft some fascinating and detailed fantasy creations. The story is what drew me in, however. Dragon Quest Builders II is ultimately a game about fate and whether we are bound to our natures that hearkens to lore from the early Dragon Quest stories. Although rife with annoyances, the overall experience is worth it.

  • Some building games are fun but ultimately feel aimless. Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a solid building game at the heart of a lengthy and well-written RPG, so that the building is always in the service of something, no matter how whimsical or weird. Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a fun and satisfying experience on many levels and the PC version is almost certainly the ultimate way to enjoy it, but like the console versions, it requires time and a commitment to the long game.

  • Even those that bounced off the original will find a reason to see this through to the end thanks to the more-structured story and its easy to follow quest system. Dragon Quest has usually been strictly associated with RPGs and Builders 2 proves that the series can work outside of those confines. And, if anything, the PC version makes that even more clear.

  • It's rare to find a game that does this much right so often. With a huge amount of content, an entertaining story, and interesting, varied gameplay, Dragon Quest Builders 2 is really an unmissable title for anyone with even a passing interest in games about building.

  • By having so many individual items, DQB2 feels way more polished. It’s also easier to make something that looks good even if you don’t feel particularly creative. There’s always going to be that person who can somehow create entire cities out of perfectly coordinated blocks, but you can happily take pride in your simple square bedrooms and toilets when all of the pieces fit together so nicely.

Despite my criticism of the pacing, I actually love this game. It improves upon the first game in all the ways I would want. I only wish there was a way to have the game stop trying to walk me through every step of the game. I would rather fail and have the game tell me I did something incorrectly than having to wait for the game to give me permission to play the game. The inclusion of a first person mode makes building roofs and exploring caves far more pleasurable than the first game as well. Overall, DQ Builders 2 manages to do everything a sequel should do to improve upon the previous game.
