- Dragon Quest Builders arrives on Steam, presenting a unique building adventure set in Alefgard, where players tackle the role of the Builder to rejuvenate a darkened world. The game's charm lies in its construction mechanics and Free Mode, offering endless creativity despite the absence of multiplayer support. The PC version enhances the experience with included DLCs and customizable controls, yet its late release and comparison to its sequel may influence its recommendation at full price.
Angelus Victor · Feb 12, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Dragon Quest Builders is an absolute delight on the PC. It balances story with building and still has time to sprinkle some familiar Dragon Quest RPG essence into the mix. While the camera is still a pain within tight spots, and when building large walls, the overall body of work is still solid.
Nathaniel Stevens · Feb 12, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Dragon Quest Builders is a crafting game that's a joy to play even all these years later, and it runs brilliantly on both PC and Steam Deck.
Lyle Carr · Feb 12, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - In its current state, Dragon Quest Builders is a fantastic game, but one I can only recommend with some big caveats and if you will stick to playing it on a modern iPhone. If you care about cloud saves, it isn’t here. Controller support is basically absent as well.
Mikhail Madnani · May 31, 2022 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Dragon Quest Builders is a fine balance between freedom of exploration and an actually decent plot you need to follow. Building entire cities with a very legitimate coat of paint is incredibly entertaining, exploring every single cave and secret area in order to find valuable items and recipes feels very rewarding, and the story itself isn’t bad at all, especially given how it ties directly to the original Dragon Quest game. Fear not, my fellow readers: this is no opportunistic cash grab, this is a very good sandbox game that will please both Dragon Quest and Minecraft fans.
Leo Faria · Apr 25, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Overall, Dragon Quest Builder’s gameplay plays to the strengths of the Nintendo Switch’s intended purposes. There are countless hours to be had here, and players with extra creativity will find reasons to come back even after the land of Alefgard has been restored.
Joe Burcin · Mar 10, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Dragon Quest Builders manages to infuse the charm and personality of Dragon Quest with the addictiveness of Minecraft excellently. It runs very well on the Switch, and the lower 720p resolution isn’t all that noticeable either, thanks to the game’s reliance on a colourful art style rather than a more photorealistic approach, while the system’s added hook of portability also makes it an inherently more convenient and accessible experience.
Shubhankar Parijat · Feb 23, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It's hard not to be charmed by Dragon Quest Builders. The team at Square Enix have managed to improve upon the concept of a crafting-focused sandbox game simply by adding in a touch of direction and personality. Players are still able to tear down and rebuild the world as they see fit, but the addition of townspeople and objectives makes Builders feel like a much more robust experience than similar games that came before it, even if it does at times feel a little clumsy.
Kevin Tucker · Feb 19, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - A lovely art style combines with some great crafting mechanics in this delightful RPG. It really is the best Minecraft-like I’ve seen, and with the charming Toriyama art style and more structured progression system, it’s a game you can play for hours. Recommended for young gamers, Dragon Quest fans, and anyone looking for something new on Nintendo Switch.
Dave Aubrey · Feb 07, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Dragon Quest Builders is a game that more than deserves your attention on Nintendo Switch. Your character may not be a hero, but the chance to rebuild ruined towns is not only brilliantly executed, but lends a sense of accomplishment that other games in the genre haven’t achieved as successfully. For once, we can leave more obvious heroics to one side and bask in our creative wonder.
