- I enjoyed my time with Double Dragon 4, it looks, sounds and plays exactly how I remember it back when I was a kid. The addition of new modes, being able to customize the controls and fun local multiplayer will make this one I most certainly will break out when friends are over. I mean how often do you get the chance to show somebody a green version of Abobo getting tornado kicked.
David Keremes · Sep 12, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It’s pretty clear that Double Dragon IV isn’t going to set the world on fire. It’s a game designed primarily to stoke nostalgia and expand the limits of what you could expect from an authenticly retro Double Dragon experience. This isn’t going to be a game that you spend weeks mastering, but that’s a complaint that you could lobby against all but the most well-designed entries in the beat ’em up genre.
Alex Santa Maria · Feb 10, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Double Dragon IV sounds like a surefire winner on paper. Craft a sequel to one of the most beloved arcade games of all-time, keep it retro in spirit, profit. However, seeing as the game was announced and released in just over a month it feels like about that much effort went into crafting this game. Will we ever get a solid follow-up to one of the greatest arcade games of all-time? Things are not looking promising for Billy and Jimmy.
Ken McKown · Feb 09, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Double Dragon IV isn’t a good game in a modern sense, but it certainly is an honest trip back in time that will, if nothing else, offer a heavy dose of nostalgia for anyone with a fondness for the Lee Brothers' 8-bit adventures. Frankly, it mimics its source material perfectly. It’s a worthwhile historical artifact if nothing else, but absolutely cannot match the vast improvements in gaming since those early days.
Jason D'Aprile · Feb 09, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Double Dragon IV is a sequel that came about three decades too late. While it’s a great follow-up to the games from the 8-bit era, it also unintentionally shines a light on the shortcomings of the time—which only the most diehard of fans will be able to overlook.
Ray Carsillo · Feb 07, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - At the time the original Double Dragon was released, it was a very well received title that spawned numerous sequels. However, the original gameplay does not hold up well at all and badly needed to be modernized, which Arc System Works chose not to do in Double Dragon IV. Even for those looking for a nostalgic trip through time, you are just much better off playing the original game and avoiding the mess that is Double Dragon IV.
Dean James · Feb 04, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I really enjoyed my time with Double Dragon IV. It’s a love letter to the franchise’s history, and really it’s only for fans of the series. If you’re a fan of Double Dragon I, II, III, Super IV, V (based on the cartoon), Battletoads, Ninja Turtles, or any other NES beat em’ up, get this inexpensive, fun throwback. You won’t be disappointed.
Stephan Adamus · Feb 03, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The overall package is hurt by occasionally clunky controls, iffy platforming and a lack of online play. Longtime fans of the series will be right at home with the overall package, though. The core gameplay is rock-solid and is well-worth checking out for longtime fans, while newcomers will find out exactly why the franchise has been so beloved over the years.
Jeremy Peeples · Feb 03, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Double Dragon IV feels like the developer Arc System Works discovered an unreleased old NES game and emulated it on PS4. Its graphics, sound, and gameplay are utterly authentic to the period. Unfortunately, so are its cheap shots and frustrating design elements. It's certainly a lot of fun to play for a while, but once its nostalgic novelty wears off, only hardcore retro fans will likely want to come back for more.
Jaz Rignall · Feb 03, 2017 Reviewed on PS4 - I am certainly not immune to the charms of 80s and 90s game design, but the NES version of Double Dragon wasn’t a great example for Double Dragon 4 to follow. It’s not just that this simplistic beat-em-up formula didn’t age well graphically or mechanically, it’s that it simply isn’t very fun or engaging to play in 2017.
