  • Doki-Doki Universe is a unique and quirky timewaster that unfortunately runs out of steam due to a lack of challenge and variety in its gameplay. While the colourful characters and brilliant art style keep it off the scrap heap, those craving a more involved experience would be better off summoning a different title to add to their collection.

  • The game tackles issues that are not only important to children, but to us as human beings – and for that both the developer and the game should be applauded. However, the Doki-Doki Universe revolves around humanity, and in the case of the PlayStation Vita version life imitates art. While it is riddled with potential, it is met equally with flaws – and while to forgive is divine; I’m not quite sure many out there will be enlightened enough to do so.

It’s sweet stuff, but repetition quickly sets in: this is a game of walking to and fro, talking to people before searching your stock of summonables for the object of their desires. ...you’ll spend far too long rummaging around before reluctantly accepting that you can’t help after all. This planet-hopping and present-snatching was fine in ToeJam & Earl but games, like Doki-Doki Universe’s robots, have moved on.

  • These quirks make Doki-Doki Universe harder to love than it should be--and its undeniable charm will make you want to love it. Years from now, will it be cherished as another flawed-but-lovable classic from PlayStation's past? Possibly. But until time's passage can smooth out its wrinkles, Doki-Doki Universe remains a flawed, if clever, experience.

  • The pattern is monotonous in larger doses, since you’re essentially repeating the same object-fetching tasks over and over again. ...It’s not the end of the world, but I thought it was annoying to sort through several layers of summons only to have my efforts wasted at random. HumaNature Studios has created something genuinely good-natured and charming with Doki-Doki Universe. Even though elements get tedious, it was overall a welcome change of pace from the ordinary.

Doki-Doki Universe’s heart is in a great place, and its charm and startlingly accurate personality analysis provide a completely novel experience the likes of which I’ve never seen before. Its slant on side quests and completionism did, at first, scratch an itch for me, but Doki soon suffers from its sheer repetition, especially because it lacks any sort of tangible challenge. Doki-Doki Universe began to stumble from exceptional to acceptable as the hours wore on.

  • Though it has some frustrating technical shortcomings and a few disappointing characterizations, Doki-Doki Universe earned my attention with a unique approach to interaction. It fills a galaxy with happy, hopeful, broken and bizarre characters, while maintaining an infectious, child-like sense of glee. It asked me to think about what it means to be human in general and also what it means to be me. In that respect, at least, Doki-Doki Universe is profoundly special.

  • It guides you along with a light touch, wrapping its warmhearted message in layer after layer of absurdity and humor. This is a strange and wonderful game, one that's equally comfortable exploring the nuances of human interaction as it is sending you through space on a flying piece of poo. Such experiences are rare in games. Then again, there's nothing commonplace about Doki-Doki Universe.

  • A cute indie game that has its moments of brilliance, that are sadly overshadowed by rather boring gameplay. What starts out as a cool trip through the trials of humanity begins to wear on you as you move from planet to planet, performing the same mundane tasks over and over again. The charm is there, shining through in the environments and characters, but is lost in a game that really doesn’t give you a lot to do.

  • Doki-Doki Universe isn't for everyone. It doesn't challenge your reflexes, and adventure game purists will likely turn up their noses at the simplistic and easily-solved puzzles. The game's laid-back vibe is irresistibly compelling, however, the dialogue is frequently hilarious.... Doki-Doki Universe is uplifting in a way that few games are; it will make you more optimistic about the world around you, and it'll make you feel like a better person for playing it.
