- Defense Grid 2 is an enjoyable return to Hidden Path’s dystopian future, though whilst the sequel features a number of improvements some key features of the original, in particular the engaging story, have been lost along the way. For fans of the genre it’s still an essential entry on PC and console, with hours of content and plenty of replayability, all wrapped up in a high quality package.
Dominic Leighton · Oct 22, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It’s easy to quickly establish a rhythm to stonewalling specific enemy types or to recognize that a tower with added damage and the means to disable enemy shields feels a little overpowered. Still, Defense Grid 2 represents the pinnacle of tower-defense design at this moment and for that it gets a firm recommendation from this reviewer.
Daniel Bischoff · Oct 17, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Defense Grid 2’s new variations on the original’s excellent tower defense gameplay pulled me right back into the compulsively addictive quest to destroy all aliens with a minimum of expenditure. I don’t recommend the multiplayer and the story doesn’t even compare to the standard set by the original, but its 20 maps absolutely scratch that same itch – and provide lots of tools to keep that momentum going for a long while.
Dan Stapleton · Oct 14, 2014 Reviewed on PC, XB1Read full review - Though not perfect, Defense Grid 2 presents one of the best tower defence options on the Japanese giant’s shiny black box. It has everything that a fan of the genre could want, loads of modes, challenges, and, at its core, is just plain fun. The back and forth between the excellently voiced characters is entertaining, even if the narrative is messy and the excellent dynamic maps are few and far between. Those willing to overlook these few flaws, though, are in for a good time.
Edwin Garcia · Oct 09, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Defense Grid 2 ‘s gameplay is fun enough to deserve some of your time, even though the visuals aren’t what you might hope for on a next-gen system. The game offers an impressive amount of variety in its missions, and coupled with great multiplayer, it’s a solid experience. The strong narrative is icing on an already tasty cake, and the smooth frame rate and comical writing seals the deal for me.
Daniel Kozlowski · Oct 06, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - With Defense Grid 2, you get a solid console edition of a tower defense game that you very well could be replaying for years to come. The story is worth-while, the balance of tower types, upgrades, and aliens gives you a lot to test your skills against. I thoroughly enjoyed this game because it took what all of us are familiar with in tower defense and made each aspect smarter, higher quality, and better than the usual fare. Now can I go play it some more?
Dyani Wood · Sep 28, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Defense Grid 2 is a fairly typical Tower Defense game at its core, but the layers of complexity give it a lot more staying power and replay value than you are likely accustomed to. With 21 campaign levels, and plans to offer countless more as downloads, there is no end to how much time you can spend with DG2, and that's not even counting fighting for placement on the leaderboards... or multiplayer. DG2 is a shining example of Kickstarter done right.
Joshua Vanderwall · Sep 26, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - At its core, Defense Grid 2 is your standard tower defense game that manages to get everything right and almost nothing wrong. It offers levels of complexity that provides gameplay value above and beyond other entries in the genre. Add to it a level editor, community map sharing and thousands of leaderboards, and you have unlimited hours of gameplay to look forward to. Defense Grid 2 is a must-buy for lovers of tower defense everywhere.
Janelle Bonanno · Sep 26, 2014 Reviewed on PC - That blandness stands out in contrast to the story, which is a lost-and-found box of silly ideas. ...Another way that Defense Grid 2 stays interesting is with well-designed level layouts. It alternates between grids where tower placement directs the flow of aliens, and more rigid layouts, which made me realize how effective fully upgraded long range missile towers are on seemingly useless tiles.
Emanuel Maiberg · Sep 25, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Defense Grid 2 pushes what you can do to a tower defense game as far as possible and still have the game remain a tower defense game. In other words, there is not many features left to add to make it have all of the features a tower defense can have. At best they can just add more variety to the existing features, like different towers, different modifications, and more enemies.
