- Fans of story-driven games or fans of the Pokémon series, in general, will enjoy Detective Pikachu. It’s a fun adventure filled with some great Pokémon and interesting cases to solve. The thing I really loved about it was how they incorporated them into various jobs in each of the game’s environments.
Justin Sharp · Jun 06, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - I did not like Detective Pikachu. It was clear very early on this game was for children, as it held my hand through problem solving the entire game. I played on normal mode so I cannot imagine how the easier gameplay mode can be any simpler than the standard game. My big point of contention with Detective Pikachu is that I played the core Pokémon games (the role playing games) as a child and many other children have done the same. Kids are not so daft to require this much hand holding, especially fans of the Pokémon series. It makes me question who this game is for other than the most extreme, hardcore Pokémon fans. Ultimately, I like the concept of Detective Pikachu and will likely see the movie when it releases, but hopefully the developers choose to challenge their audience a bit more with any potential sequel.
Anthony Mann · Apr 25, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - I absolutely ended up adoring Detective Pikachu. It’s a sharp, clever game with fantastic writing and some great characterization that knows that it has a ridiculous premise, and runs with it. It looks great, has great voice acting, and plays fine as well.
Pramath Parijat · Apr 05, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Detective Pikachu is a solid, unique spinoff in the Pokemon series that stands out from other spinoffs. It’s a relatively easy point-and-click adventure game that won’t take much to complete in a few sittings. But some aspects of the gameplay do get clever, and the story does resonate. It’s nothing revolutionary, but I can always appreciate a fun with a fun feel and colorful aesthetic.
Bryan Rose · Apr 02, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - I enjoy catching hundreds of Pokémon and collecting gym badges as the next person, but I wouldn’t mind more diversions from the main Pokémon series if they come packed with as much hilarity and oddball humor that Detective Pikachu provided me at my side.
Ryan Meitzler · Apr 01, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - His lightning-quick powers of deduction and obsession with gulping down coffee blends from High Hat Café aside, the greatest praise that I can throw at Detective Pikachu is how it always felt like you were really working alongside the electric mouse. And, as we cracked our last case, I can only hope that this is only the start of our adventures together.
Alex Seedhouse · Mar 30, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - While it’s an odd idea for a spin-off, Detective Pikachu manages to create something never seen in the series that works better than anyone might have expected. The only thing it’s missing is a way to make things more challenging, as even younger players would likely feel as though their hand was being held a bit too much.
Kirstin Swalley · Mar 29, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Despite its title, Detective Pikachu isn’t for people who like a good mystery. Its larger narrative isn’t sophisticated, and I felt like I was just going through the motions to solve the smaller mysteries along the way. Even so, Pikachu made a delightful Watson to my Holmes, full of genuine charm and laughs. I enjoyed exploring this Pokémon-filled world with a surly Pikachu so much that I almost didn’t care how we filled our time.
Ben Reeves · Mar 29, 2018 Reviewed on 3DS - Still, Detective Pikachu has been a solid hit through and through. From Pikachu's weirdly appropriate voice to the fun cases involving both Pokémon and humans to the interesting detective cases to solve, I had a blast getting to the end of the game. It may seem like a trainwreck when you look at it all rationally, but it's some of the most fun I've had in the Pokémon universe in some time.
Brittany Vincent · Mar 29, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Detective Pikachu takes several steps away from the traditional Pokémon experience, with only a handful paying off. The beautiful imagery and distinct world-building will please any Pokémon fan, but the gameplay might leave them wanting more. While the point-and-click-style experience is a novel idea for the gameplay, it never manages to fully grab the player’s attention.
