  • If you’ve played any Diablo-style RPG and any Monkey Island-style adventure and enjoyed them, you know you’ll like DeathSpank. It’s a hilarious and seamless combination of the two genres more than worthy of your 15 bucks and a couple weekends of your time.

  • So you're left with something that's funny, full of character both visually and verbally, and which has a mildly frustrating combo system piled on top. For the level of amusement I derived from Deathspank, I think I can live with that. There was something about thongs in there too. Thongs are pretty funny.

If you like sweet loot, hacking things to death, looking at beautiful landscapes and laughing at good writing, you might want to pick up DeathSpank. However, although the game shines in many areas, it does have its flaws. Questing can turn into a noticeable chore, and I would have gladly substituted some of the missions in favor of some more brainteasers. Still, DeathSpank is a fun adventure worth exploring.

  • The extent of DeathSpank's content is a timely nod at the current state of the downloadable games market; but it's also the game's Achilles' heel due to repetitive design. DeathSpank often leans on its writing to carry the experience, but despite its biggest marketing hook being the name of legendary video game comic Ron Gilbert, it's unlikely to illicit much more than a sympathetic smile.

  • DeathSpank is an absolute blast, a ton of fun to play, and thanks to a well-written script and befitting voice acting, it’s comedic gold. The combat is pretty deep and looting is always a blast. Although there are some negative aspects in the game, the positives far out-weigh them. For a game that offers approximately 8 – 12 hours of gameplay and only costs $15, this is one role-playing game that every PlayStation 3 owner should rush to the PlayStation Store and get to downloading, now.

  • DeathSpank has a hook that makes you want to keep playing it. But that alone doesn't make it a fantastic game. Its moments of brilliance are usually directly offset by its shortcomings. But if you aren't especially picky and you're on the hunt for something new to play during these slow summer months, DeathSpank's good enough to fit the bill.

  • Overall DeathSpank is a fun little game that should take you about 8 or so hours to complete. The script is fun, and it offers up a lot of customisation. Unfortunately the constant questing and slaying can get a bit tedious in the long run. Thankfully the steady influx of new weapons and armour helps break up the tedium somewhat, but more varied quests and more puzzle elements would be welcome. There are worse things you can spend $15 on, and DeathSpank is well worth the time and money spent.

  • For a downloadable game that weighs in at a "mere" 1 gigabyte, DeathSpank is a big adventure covering a large and diverse gameworld. It's a land where you can (and will want to) spend days completing every last quest -- with a friend using couch co-op, even! For comparison sake, I played both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, which are nearly identical -- save for some unsightly screen tearing in the PS3 release.

  • DeathSpank maintains a tongue-in-cheek quality throughout that mocks hackneyed game conventions even as it celebrates them. If you've played several RPGs before, you'll definitely be in on the jokes, but the never-ending fetch-quest gag isn't quite as funny when you actually have to do the legwork. If you're a compulsive achiever and level-upper, DeathSpank is a fun and charming way to pass 10 or so hours and well worth its $15 price tag.

  • The combat is simple, but there are so many spells and items to play around with that it stays consistently entertaining. And the colorful visuals and infectious soundtrack add to the experience. A few truncated elements do serve as roadblocks, though. The stripped cooperative play adds little to the quest, and you don't have much say in how your character levels up. But DeathSpank is so charming and endearing that it's easy to lose hours to this quest trying to obtain another ancient artifact.
