- Rough but charming, an apocalyptic treat if you know what you’re getting into.
Mark Richard · Jul 21, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - What it lacks in polish it at least largely makes up for in personality, even with glitches and rough edges as far as the eye can see. Unfortunately, even that can’t make up for the chore that much of it soon becomes, and as much as the repetition of scavenging, crafting and surviving is true to the world, the sheer number of other zombie and survival games right now make it tough to stay in the mood for this one.
Richard Cobbett · Dec 18, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Dead State gets far on the strength of its writing and its pen-and-paper spirit. Its slice of Texas is dotted with busted gas stations, restaurants, and offices that are fun to comb for loot. The game’s technical flaws are a burden to the player, and simple zombie behavior eventually dulls the tension of fighting the undead. Still, what it offers as an RPG—grounded survival drama, tough character conflicts, and generally good turn-based combat—is rare enough to make it worth playing.
Evan Lahti · Dec 17, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - I’m sure future patches will resolve these problems, and the majority of them tend not to be game-breaking. But it does prevent Dead State from feeling quite as polished as it could have been. That aside, Dead State remains a solid and engaging experience into which RPG and survival fans will sink hours. It may not have ended up being the first, but Doublebear has certainly earned its place among the zombie survival greats.
Marshall Lemon · Dec 10, 2014 Reviewed on PC - Dead State is a very fun zombie apocalypse RPG but it’s not quite the hoped-for second coming of Troika. The moment-to-moment decisions, the events and the characters kept me playing, but the less polished areas like pathfinding and the generally repetitive nature of the gameplay nearly made me stop. It’s certainly a good game that I can recommend to anyone looking for an RPG where you struggle to survive and have to manage a shelter in the end of the world, but it’s no Fallout.
Chris J Capel · Jan 05, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There's nothing here that can't be fixed with a few well aimed patches and balancing tweaks however. For all its lack of technical polish, there's nothing game breaking and even as the challenge diminishes in direct proportion to your playing time, the stories that come out of the cast of broad appealing archetypes will keep you on the wheel through another day and night cycle.
