- Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump. It may be a newcomer, but the seeds of an incredible franchise have been sown, and EA's in a great position to reap a phenomenal franchise full of scares. If you like survival horror, action or sci-fi, Dead Space needs to be on your radar.
Jeff Haynes · Oct 23, 2008 Reviewed on PCRead full review - In the end, I can live with a lackluster story with this level of combat and game play. Dead Space is a beautiful videogame, showing incredible polish and detail in both the visuals and the control. The amount of love and attention packed into this title is apparent, as scares and action are perfectly blended. What an incredibly impressive way for a new survival horror franchise to debut!
Conrad Zimmerman · Oct 21, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Normally games that borrow a lot of elements from others end up being less than the sum of their parts, but for everything Dead Space borrows it gives something back. The atmosphere is Metroid Prime, and the structure is Resident Evil, but everything else is all its own. The strategic dismemberment, mixture of weapons and supernatural abilities, and relentless intensity make for a game that you’ll be scared to keep playing, but won’t want to stop.
Game Trailers · Oct 21, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360 - Dead Space would be a great game no matter who made it, but I'm more impressed with it since it's coming out of EA. That bastion of the annualized sequel is finally taking some risks with original games, if not always original ideas, and in this case the risk paid huge dividends. You've probably seen most of Dead Space's parts in other games from time to time, but you've rarely seen them assembled this well.
Brad Shoemaker · Oct 20, 2008 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Dead Space is a remarkable game from a well-tread genre that manages to stand out from its competitors in almost every way, from visual presentation to engaging story, innovative combat mechanics to fright factor. Whether you're looking for a terrifying horror experience or a deeply story-driven adventure that will keep you engaged for 15-20 hours, Dead Space is a fantastic game that you should not pass on.
Lark Anderson · Oct 13, 2008 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360Read full review - On the whole though, Dead Space is a superb survival horror romp that's guaranteed to scare. If you like Resident Evil 4, you should definitely go out and buy this game right now. It's clearly set up for a sequel, and we can't wait. For now though, we'll leave you with the obligatory 'best played alone and with the lights off' advice. Go on.
Wesley Yin-Poole · Oct 13, 2008 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Dead Space is undoubtedly a good game, but one filled with promise of much more than that. A dreadful story, gameplay that was slightly too repetitive, tedious and unnecessary backtracking, and too many dreary corridors all combine to let Dead Space down slightly. But solid graphics, great lighting, holographic HUD, some stunningly impressive vistas, an eerie atmosphere and an addictive Resident Evil 4-esque style of gameplay make Dead Space a game that I can recommend, and I eagerly await an improved sequel.
Craig Snow · Nov 09, 2008 Reviewed onRead full review - There is so much in Dead Space to mention that doing so would make this review very, very long. Puzzles using Kinesis and Stasis, timed events in airless zones, spacewalks across an asteroid-ridden hull, enough enemies to never leave players comfortable. If not for the submissive, cliché’d last two hours of the story and the un-dramatic terror-inducing scenes, Dead Space would be a rich, enthusiastic game for anyone to enjoy.
James Pikover · Oct 31, 2008 Reviewed on PCRead full review - None of these criticisms will detract from your enjoyment, provided all you want from a game is the opportunity to repeatedly turn evil monsters into red mush in gorgeous HD detail. Dead Space easily delivers on that promise, but fails to turn its polished production values into something truly memorable over the long haul.
Dan Whitehead · Oct 13, 2008 Reviewed on X360Read full review - EA’s Dead Space delivers in every conceivable way. Hop on board and see space like never before: dead. Dead Space is a thrilling scarefest filled with nightmarish creatures, gory detail, and the ability to make any gamer wish it was the daytime. Redwood Shores has delivered a truly must-buy title during a month of standout releases.
