  • This is perhaps the inevitable reality of creating a searing, stylish new IP – that two sequels down the line, the need to maximise appeal has turned everything great about that game into the still-beating heart of a commercial machine augmented with features, an appealing hero, and explosive moments. Dead Space 3 is still good, and it's still Dead Space. It's just lots of other things as well.

  • It’s worth noting that Visceral has paid attention to the needs of PC players this time out, and that Dead Space 3 is the best PC version to come out of the series, period. That’s a big improvement over where things started with Dead Space, and a welcome change. Sure, it’d be nice to see the kind of PC support title such as Battlefield 3 and Crysis 3 are getting, but Dead Space 3 is more than a straight port and still quite a bit of fun.

  • It’s not often that a sequel can surpass its original tale, but with Dead Space 3, Visceral manages to do just that. Almost every aspect of the game is improved over earlier entries, and surprisingly, the addition of cooperative play actually enhances the overall game in ways no one but Visceral expected. Even if you choose to completely ignore that addition, the single-player campaign is the strongest in the series, and elevates the Dead Space mythology to new heights, while continuing to lay groundwork for even more stories within the universe.

  • The essential ingredients of what makes a Dead Space game good changes with each iteration that is released; each title is different, but they are all good. Though I feel Dead Space 3 may not be the strongest of all the three Dead Space games I found I still enjoyed it thoroughly and feel that it is definitely a title that should be on every action gamer’s radar.

  • The changes thrown into the game inevitably damage its charm, though, and make this a step down from its predecessors. A step down from Dead Space's high standards don't necessarily make for a bad game -- far from it, in fact, for this is still a bloody great game and well worth any fans' time. It's sad that market pressure and industry fear tried so hard to ruin things, but one can at least savor the victory of Dead Space 3's creative success in spite of commercial encroachment.

The combat system and the world Visceral has crafted in Dead Space 3 is so expertly built and well-wrought, I found myself consciously overlooking my main criticisms, because I love playing it and spending time with it. This is an important distinction to make: loving a game while being fully aware of its faults. Dead Space 3, when played the way I've been playing it, on New Game+, is an engrossing and satisfying experience. But it requires ignoring the bad story and the numbing to-do lists. It then becomes all about building up the most powerful, best outfitted Isaac you can imagine.

  • Beyond that, Dead Space 3 is an exciting, shocking and mammoth adventure through the ghostly, unvarnished segments of space – and you do, thankfully, get to spend some more time flying. There aren't many games that can match the lonely, liberating movements of Isaac Clarke in nullified gravity, or his vengeful, squishy stomps of victory.

  • Carver and Clarke’s expedition is often intense, but at the same time overly familiar. The switch from outer space to a Hoth-inspired topography will reset your expectations, but the novelty won’t last long. Dead Space 3 has the bad habit of drawing you into a tantalizing catastrophe right before goading you right back into its more tedious and borderline exploitative elements. The quest is long and the side-content plentiful, but it all comes at the expense of the atmosphere. In our estimation, it’s a poor bargain.

  • Dead Space 3 positively nails its science fiction storyline, slowly spiraling up to a go-for-broke conclusion. It's a different tone than the first Dead Space, for sure, but it's a damn good one. The fighting never evolves past point-and-shoot and the boss fights are dull , but the weaponcrafting is a lot of fun to tinker with.

  • Dead Space 3 is a monster of a game. Visceral avoided major deviations from the gameplay loop established by the previous games, instead choosing to refine those mechanics. But it has made major, substantive additions to the game's structure that make Dead Space 3 feel much more ambitious. Even more surprisingly, it has successfully executed on all of them. Visceral hasn't just avoided screwing up its game with co-op it has made it feel natural and at home, and has done it without impacting the single-player experience in any negative way.

About the game

Dead Space 3 brings Isaac Clarke and merciless soldier, John Carver, on a journey across space to discover the source of the Necromorph outbreak. Crash-landed on the frozen planet of Tau Volantis, the pair must comb the harsh environment for raw materials and scavenged parts.
