Dead Block is a prime example of failed execution in almost every respect. It controls poorly, the levels are boring, and the trap/barrier concept is never very well explored. There’s still room for a clever zombie title in the crowd of games mining that vein, but Dead Block squanders its cool concept and ends up braindead.

  • The campy B-movie vibe and cartoon aesthetic aren't good enough to add much appeal, and the few clever ideas get lost in a sea of relentless button tapping. In an actual zombie apocalypse, Dead Block's simple zombie-clearing tactics and industrious fortification construction would be desirable, but in this video game zombie apocalypse, they're just dull.

  • Dead Block takes a popular genre that thrives on increasingly manic gameplay meant to evoke higher and higher tension levels, and turns it into something dull. It may have had the beginnings of a genuiningly fun game at some concept stage, but the end result is a repetitive game that you'll likely get tired of before it ends.

  • With so little content to speak of, and only early fits of charm to mask the overwhelmingly monotonous mechanics, Dead Block feels like a weird product of a bygone era. It's as if it was plucked from the earliest days of downloadable gaming, back when digital games often relied more on single-minded gimmicks than the fully fleshed-out concepts of late, and $10 seemed like such a great deal for any game you could play with buttons on a console. That era has long since passed us by, and we're better for it. Pass on Dead Block, and you'll be better for it, too.

  • Dead Block showed a lot of potential during the first few minutes, but after a while it became clear that Candygun Games has failed with some aspects; they were sitting on a great, unique concept but just didn’t know how to properly incorporate the gameplay. If you can get over the repetitive gameplay, then by all means, buy Dead Block.

  • It doesn't help that game seems incapable of making the basics fun. So much of your time is spent tediously smashing things up and searching for objects that you'd at least hope that decking the undead might be enjoyable, but no. The flimsy combat compounds the issue, and far from providing the amusing romp intended, it just flails along like a windmilling child.

    About the game

Dead Block focuses on innovative defensive gameplay in which the few remaining survivors, Jack Foster (a construction worker), Foxy Jones (a traffic warden), and Mike Bacon (a perpetually hungry boy scout) have formed an unlikely alliance to protect themselves from the invading undead. Hiding in various shelters around town, they avoid Zombies by building blockades, setting fiendish traps or – as a last resort – using their weapons to fight.
