- Darkest Dungeon II is a hardcore game that offers a unique roguelike experience. It’s important that fans of the first temper their expectations going into the second, because it is vastly different, and expecting more of the same will only set those individuals up for disappointment. There is challenge, and there is satisfaction in overcoming that challenge, but it will take time and patience as you learn the various systems that come together to make a complex and engaging roguelike.
Ryan Taylor · Oct 27, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Darkest Dungeon II provides an extremely challenging, roguelike adventure for fans turn-based combat games. The difficulty will turn away some players, but those who stick with it will be rewarded by fun gameplay and a compelling story set in an astoundingly designed world.
KENNY MASSEY · Aug 20, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Darkest Dungeon 2 does a lot right. My fear is that is so different in places to its predecessor that it may alienate its fan base a little. The combat is improved, the visuals, cinematography and sound work is top notch. This game does so much to make the game smoother, simpler and easier to play, unfortunately it loses a little of what made the first so amazing along the way.
Sebastian Hawden · Aug 18, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Taking up the torch of hope against the forces of evil was never going to be an easy task, and Darkest Dungeon II makes sure you feel it. While the roster of heroes creates plenty of opportunities for build crafting, actually interacting with all of the systems in the game can feel like a slog at times. Even so, there’s enjoyment to be found in this roguelite spin on the brutally difficult combat and festering world that Darkest Dungeon is known for.
Corvo Rohwer · Aug 04, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - While Darkest Dungeon II is a fantastic game at its core, everytime I sat down to play it, I kept catching myself thinking "Boy, I wish I was playing the other Darkest Dungeon”. There's nothing really wrong with the game (outside of the freezing problem, which could be fixed by the time this comes out); it's just that its change of direction into a more Slay The Spire roguelike style didn’t really sit well with me. But that's ok, as stated prior, Red Hook Studios didn’t want this to replace the original and I think they’ve succeeded in that; they just now have to deal with a divided fanbase.
Jake Mounsey · Aug 04, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - In many ways, Darkest Dungeon 2 is an upgrade, but some may think it went too far. When you boil it down to exploring and fighting, it’s a joy even when the enemies are slamming you around. And you will sink many hours into working your way through the various biomes in the hope of surviving this nightmare world.
Dan Lipscombe · Jul 23, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I have said many times that I am not a big fan of these roguelite games, and while that remains true; I did enjoy all my time with Darkest Dungeon II much like I did the original. The first few runs are going to feel absolutely unfair as players will fall long before reaching the boss of an area. But there is something to be said of finally figuring out the perfect team and finding success in the ashes of defeat. I do wish this game had a campfire or some sort of checkpoint system because its not a great feeling to be hours into a run and have to start ALL over because of a small oversight. But even with these small issues I still couldn’t stop thinking about new strategies to help my heroes find success in this dark and gothic world. This is a dangerous journey, but it’s one worth taking.
Terrence Johnson · Jul 23, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Despite the console-centric flaw of navigating menus and unforgiving opening hours, Darkest Dungeon II is a brutally brilliant turn-based RPG roguelike. From the flawless presentation to the complex systems, the game leaves so much room for near-endless opportunities to tinker with – Darkest Dungeon II is a challenge you can’t help but accept.
Joshua Thompson · Jul 19, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Darkest Dungeon II will either break your spirit or give you strength you never knew you had, offering a tough but rewarding experience.
Chris White · Jul 15, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Darkest Dungeon 2 is a beautiful, great-sounding, difficult, and addictive roguelike. If you’re into the genre then it’s an easy recommendation on whatever platform you prefer. It works great with a controller and can last 100+ hours if you want to see everything.
