- With the enemy placement changed, it really does offer a newer challenge to veteran players, and while the double weapon degradation is really, really annoying, it can be managed. It’s just going to take a lot of backtracking. PC players that have already played the game and DLC are the ones that will maybe think twice before going through it again, while Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 players will get the most out of it.
Drew Leachman · Apr 23, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - When I first saw those redesigned areas in action at a preview event earlier this year, I got the impression that they largely served the purpose of making the game harder. They seemed custom-designed to pull hardcore fans looking for more of a challenge back into the game, and I was concerned about where that left new fans jumping into Dark Souls 2 for the first time with Scholar of the First Sin. ...The build-up doesn't feel ludicrously more difficult; if anything, it feels more natural.
Philip Kollar · Apr 17, 2015 Reviewed onRead full review - Overall, Scholar of the First Sin is a fantastic upgrade and worth the purchase if you never had the chance to play Dark Souls 2 on PC or current gen consoles. Even if you did play through it before, the DLC alone is worth checking out. The visual upgrades are rather stunning if you haven’t played on PC, and the new enemy positions offer veteran players a nice surprise.
Nicholas Plouffe · Apr 15, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - On the face of it, Dark Souls II: Scholar Of The First Sin isn't all that impressive when compared to other remasters. Visually, it's a step up, but it's not a current gen eye-melter, and if you've played the DLC already, you'd be forgiven for thinking there's little reason to get this. However, the improved visuals, much smoother frame rate, all the DLC, and the remixed enemies and items make for a great, if subtle remaster, and if you're a hardened Souls fan, or you've yet to play the game, this is essential.
Aaron Birch · Apr 11, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - From Software once raised the bar for game design; now, they've done the same for HD remakes. Rest assured, this isn't just a lazy repackaging of old content. Even if you know the Kingdom of Drangleic like the back of your hand, you're in for many new surprises. And if you've never played Dark Souls II before, your patience has paid off: This is simply the best version of it you'll ever play.
Bob Mackey · Apr 10, 2015 Reviewed on XB1 - Its greatest spectacles are the ones that will kill you the fastest. It will taunt. It will demoralize. And yet, it has never done a better job than now of beckoning you on than in Scholar of the First Sin. ...That's a feeling that few games offer and few even should. And yet, the exultation of hard-earned victory here, of saying “What's next” with all the fear, fascination, and excitement of any good, bloody fight, has more joys than most, and even though the game is won, I find myself itching to go back.
Justin Clark · Apr 08, 2015 Reviewed onRead full review - For newcomers Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin is a superb package, with the wonderful DLC thrown in and the visuals at the best they have ever been. However, it's also tough going thanks to the remixed enemy placements and new random encounters. For veterans this is a welcome return to Drangleic but not one that is mandatory, as the changes feel all too insubstantial at times. So while Scholar of the First Sin is the definitive package, it isn’t one that is required for repeat visitors.
Lee Abrahams · Apr 08, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Scholar of the First Sin is best suited for two types of player: Complete Souls newcomers that insist on playing with the latest hardware, and returning warriors who soaked up every bit of new game-plus content loaded into the original. While I don't think the encounters are quite up to the level of the original, it's hard to argue with more of one of 2014's best games.
Tim Turi · Apr 07, 2015 Reviewed on PS4 - Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin targets two audiences: newcomers and veterans. In both cases it succeeds. Folks who have yet to play Dark Souls II will get the best version of the game with all of the available content, while veterans who love Dark Souls II will get to experience a series of small alterations that do enough to set Scholar of the First Sin apart from the original
Anthony LaBella · Apr 06, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Not quite content with improving the graphics and lumping in the downloadable content and calling it a day, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin feels like From Software’s definitive vision for the game. The only thing that feels bad about this re-release is that it’s only been a year since the game first hit store shelves. Why we can’t get this type of experience on the first go is a little disheartening.
