  Dakar Desert Rally is the rally game that we secretly wanted but did not dare wish for. The production quality is that of a huge budget triple-A title and this is easily noticeable when it comes to the amazing graphics and lovely SFX. You have a huge range of vehicles to race on the many desert roads, and the replayability of this title seems endless. There is something for everyone to enjoy and the mechanic of keeping your car in shape feels right in place for an endurance race like this.

  At the end of the day, Dakar Desert Rally is a mix of good things and bad things, but on quite a lot of occasions, I feel like the game is still a work in progress. Sure, it’s hard to hit all the right spots from the very beginning, but aside from an enjoyable Dakar racing experience, the game needs refinements in many key areas.

  The game still feels rough around the edges. Some have reported issues with autosaves resulting in lost hours of gameplay. There are some noticeable graphical issues such as stuttering for each of the modes: performance or quality.

  The vast open world is truly breathtaking and doubling down on the Dakar experience with great orienteering is a welcome challenge. Seasoned racers will find a new and unique challenge here that will keep you more than busy until the planned updates arrive.

  Overall Dakar Desert Rally is a diamond in the rough. With the upcoming features adding another layer to the game and a little bit of rounding off and Saber Porto/Saber Interactive have come up with a winner. Newcomers and casual racer fans will love how the game looks and have plenty of fun in sport mode while hardcore fans or players who love a challenge will have a great time mastering.

  Way Too Many Games

  The game itself is actually pretty good, despite its technical issues, but it is a very niche rallying game that pales in comparison to its vast amount of competitors when you put them side by side. Maybe a follow-up will add a quick play mode and fix its technical issues. As it stands, it’s janky and still brutal towards newcomers, but it’s a step in the right direction for the series.

  Dakar Desert Rally has a fabulous sense of scale and is capable of some great, unique racing – especially when bombing over barren, building-sized sand dunes in a big rig while kicking up huge rooster tails of sand in search of a mysterious navigation marker. It is, however, dramatically undercut by unstable and annoying handling for several of its vehicle classes, its uneven performance mode frame rate, and some significant bugs that can cost you hours of progress.

  Dakar Desert Rally is a game full of peaks and troughs. Your heart will be racing when you’re hurtling through a desert during a sandstorm in a rally car, but when just a little too much throttle causes you to spin your bike and move from first to last in the middle of a snowy battle, you’ll be beyond frustrated. Still, it captures the essence of the controversial rally pretty well.

  The problem is it's at that moment that you round the bend and slam into a random truck or the game hitches and you suddenly understeer into a rock wall. Substantial patching would do this game wonders, but as it stands, it's a joyless mess that delivers frustrations at a far greater rate than podiums.
